Basic Education Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa has announced that teachers and other personnel who worked on the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations will begin receiving their outstanding allowances from Thursday.
The PS confirmed that the Ministry of Education has already transferred the required funds to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), leaving the council to complete the payment process.
Speaking before the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education on Tuesday, Ololtuaa assured legislators that the delay in settling the payments was being addressed.
“The Ministry has released the funds to KNEC, and the council is expected to commence payment of examination personnel starting Thursday, August 6,” he said.
KNEC to process payments
Ololtuaa explained that KNEC is now responsible for processing and disbursing the funds to eligible examination personnel across the country.
His remarks come amid growing concerns from teachers and examiners who had complained that they were yet to receive their allowances despite earlier government assurances that funds had been secured.
The issue was raised before the parliamentary committee after several examiners questioned why payments had not been made weeks after the National Treasury released the money to the Ministry of Education.
Government had released Ksh1.5 billion
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba had earlier confirmed that the government received Ksh1.5 billion from the National Treasury to clear outstanding payments owed to examination personnel.
The funds are intended to settle balances for those involved in administering and marking both the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations and the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).
Ogamba said all eligible examiners would receive the remaining portion of their allowances through KNEC.
Examiners thanked for patience
The Cabinet Secretary acknowledged the delay in processing the payments and thanked examination personnel for their patience.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to honouring its financial obligations, noting that the release of funds would enable KNEC to complete payments without further delays.
The announcement is expected to provide relief to thousands of teachers and examination officials who participated in the administration and marking of the 2025 national examinations and had been awaiting their outstanding dues.
