President Ruto leads ‘One Minute Of Silence’ for the late Raila Odinga during Jamhuri Day celebrations

Date:

President William Ruto led Kenyans and other dignitaries in a ‘one minute of silence’ in honor of the late Raila Odinga during Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium.

The President described the Late Raila Odinga as a towering figure who’s sacrifice expanded the democratic space Kenya enjoys today.

In his speech President Ruto honored Raila for his resolve that gave Kenya the 2010 Constitution, a charter that restored the sovereignty of the people, restrained imperial power, entrenched rights and devolved government and authority to the grassroots.

“I now respectfully urge all of us to join me in observing a one minute of silence in honour, and remembrance of the Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga, and honour his sacrifice, service and enduring legacy”, President Ruto asked.

“May his spirit continue to guide our nation forward”, he added after the one minute of silence.

President Ruto noted that Raila devoted his life to the pursuit of freedom, justice and peaceful co-existence, with his courage, resilience and unwavering believe in the power of the people shaping defining chapters of the nation’s national story and inspired generations to believe that change is possible.

“In the darkest days when it was dangerous to speak, brave Kenyans spoke. While it was illegal to organise, courageous Kenyans organised. Students, clergy, lawyers, journalists, workers, and politicians, stood firm, against detention, against torture, against exile and even death so that Kenya could break and breathe again”, President Ruto said.

In his address, the President highlighted the unfinished dream of both the independence and subsequent generation.
“Today, with honesty and humility, we must admit that this promise remains incomplete”

Raila Odinga died in India at the age of 80 on October 15, 2025.
