Weatherman puts Kenyans in 13 counties on alert over potential flooding

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an alert to 13 counties likely to experience floods in the next three days and advised residents to be extra vigilant to avoid destruction of properties and loss of lives.

The latest forecast shows that heavy rainfall exceeding 30mm is expected in Migori, Homabay, Kisii, Narok, Kajiado, Machakos, Makueni, Kericho, Nairobi, Bomet and southern parts of Kitui, Kwale and Taita Taveta starting today, December 27, 2025.

“The rains are projected to reduce in intensity on December 30. Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods,” Acting KMD Director Kennedy Thiong’o shared, assuring prompt updates in event of changes.

An earlier forecast December 23–29 forecast showed many areas in South and Central Kenya will receive significant amounts of rainfall this week while Northern Kenya counties will remain dry.

Kilifi and Mombasa had also been listed among counties that would experience flooding especially in low areas where rainfall amounts were projected to go up to 70mm while Lamu and Tana River would get depressed rains.

Light to moderate rain of 10-20mm are expected in Kisumu, Siaya, Kakamega, Bungoma, and Busia though some isolated areas within the Lake Victoria basin could get a little extra amount of rain.

Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Embu, and Meru counties and eastern parts of the Rift Valley will experience scattered showers of between 1-20mm.

Heavy Rainfall alert

Counties to remain dry with almost no rain at all are Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, and parts of Garissa.
