#MorningBrief: ODM splinter group’s mega Busia rally, Liverpool loss to Man City and HIV healing claims top trends in Kenya

Date:

Kenya’s online space is buzzing this morning as faith, politics, sports and activism collide on social media.

From viral claims of miraculous healing and heated political hashtags to high-stakes football rivalries and BBC backlash, today’s trending topics offer a snapshot of the issues capturing the nation’s attention. Here’s a look at what Kenyans are talking about and why it matters.

HIVHealedMustWatch

This is a religious driven trend and is emanating from Repentance and Holiness Church’s believers who are claiming miraculous HIV healing. The trend pits faith vs science and hope vs misinformation.
“HIV is not greater than the power of GOD. What medicine manages, the BLOOD of JESUS erases. This is not hype. This is a testimony!! HIV met the blood of JESUS and lost the case. This generation must know that GOD still heals,” Redempta Koech shared.

Liverpool

It’s about the yesterday’s 2-1 loss to Manchester City at Anfield in the English Premier League.
The loss has worsened Liverpool’s quest to play Champions League football next season while Manchester City maintains a 6 points difference with league leaders Arsenal.

RutoMustGo

This is a political protest hashtag that reflects public frustration over public debt, corruption, cost of living and poverty under President William Ruto’s tenure.
Critics say the tax relief for low earners is insufficient while supporters call for support to Ruto’s reelection.

LIVMCI

This is linked to yesterday’s Liverpool vs Manchester City clash. It’s accompanying posts discussing the match including lineup selection, refereeing decisions and where both teams stand in the English Premier League table.

SuperBowl

Though an American event, the Super Bowl show is trending globally—including Kenya. Fans are playfully declaring themselves Puerto Rican just for Bad Bunny’s historic Spanish-language performance.

Busia

Busia is trending due to yesterday’s Linda Wananchi tour of the county by young Turks in ODM party including embattled Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Deputy Party leader Godfrey Osotsi.
Among other leaders in the mega rally was Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks are trending because of the Super Bowl buzz.
Their top ranked defense has stifled New England’s Rookie QB Drake Maye, holding them scoreless through two quarters despite Pats strong regular season scoring defense.

Anfield

Liverpool’s home ground is trending as a result of yesterday’s clash with Manchester City where they lost 1-2, further dimming the chances of the defending champions qualifying for the UEFA champions league next season.

Hela

This trend is accompanying posts on how Kenyans are working towards putting money (Hela) in their pockets with betting in the list.

Chombo cha Wanaharakati

Swahili for “vehicle of activists.” is featuring mainly on posts castigating BBC News Africa recent documentary on Tanzanian government that allegedly featured activists as main characters in the work.
“In Tanzania many activists featured by BBC Africa face strong public opposition because they are known for receiving money from foreign countries. This opposition is never shown in the reports,” Jembe la Majembe shared.
