Government unveils Sh44.3 Billion development projects in Meru

Date:

The government has rolled out development projects worth approximately Sh44.3 billion across Meru County, covering infrastructure, healthcare, markets and electrification.

Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki said the projects are aimed at accelerating economic growth and improving essential services in the region.

Among the key projects is the Sh1 billion Gakoromone Market in Meru town, for which about Sh1 billion has already been released. The modern market is expected to boost trade and provide improved working conditions for traders.

Major Infrastructure and Health Projects

The county is also witnessing the construction of the Sh1 billion Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital, alongside a Sh3.7 billion road network project connecting Meru town and surrounding constituencies.

According to Prof Kindiki, road works are currently underway in nine constituencies, forming part of the Sh3.7 billion allocation aimed at improving connectivity and easing transportation.

In addition, the government is investing Sh900 million in the redevelopment of Kinoru Stadium, which will have a seating capacity of 10,000 spectators upon completion.

Seventeen new food markets are under construction across the county at a cost of Sh2 billion, while 26,000 homes and business premises are being connected to electricity through a Sh2.3 billion programme.

The Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital is also set to be upgraded from a Level 5 to a Level 6facility, enabling it to offer specialised services including advanced surgery, cancer treatment and kidney care.

Leaders inspect projects

Prof Kindiki toured the projects over the weekend, accompanied by Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma, Deputy Governor Linda Kiome and several local leaders.

Speaking during the inspection, leaders underscored the importance of collaboration between the national and county governments to fast-track development.

Among those present were Imenti North MP Rahim Dawood, Tigania East MP Mpuri Aburi, Igembe Central MP Dan Kiili, Meru Woman Representative Elizabeth Kailemia and Nominated MP Dorothy Muthoni.

The leaders urged residents to support the projects, noting that they are expected to create employment opportunities and significantly improve livelihoods across the county.

They also expressed appreciation to the government for prioritising development in Meru, saying the investments will transform the region’s economic landscape and enhance service delivery.
