Ruto’s holds meeting with US lawmakers, on matter trade, security and new conservation deals

Date:

President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s strong diplomatic and economic ties with the United States following a high-level meeting with visiting US Congressional leaders at State House, Nairobi.

In a statement after the meeting, the President described Kenya–US relations as “cordial, strong and enduring,” noting that the partnership continues to be anchored on shared interests and mutual benefit.

What Was Discussed at State House

During the engagement, President Ruto hosted a delegation of US lawmakers, including Lola Zinke, Tom Suozzi, Guy Reschenthaler, and Julia Brownley.

The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation across key sectors such as trade, healthcare, regional stability, security, and defence.

Ruto emphasized that the longstanding relationship between the two countries continues to evolve, opening doors for deeper collaboration in both economic and strategic areas.

Why AGOA Remains Critical for Kenya

A key highlight of the talks was the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a US trade initiative that allows goods from Sub-Saharan African countries, including Kenya, to access the American market duty-free and quota-free.

The programme has been instrumental in boosting Kenya’s exports, particularly in textiles and agricultural products, while supporting job creation and industrial growth.

Ruto noted that continued engagement on AGOA remains vital in sustaining Kenya’s export competitiveness in the global market.

New Areas of Cooperation in Conservation

Beyond trade and security, the meeting also explored emerging opportunities in environmental conservation.

The President revealed that Kenya and the US are looking to expand partnerships in the protection and management of national parks, game reserves, and coastal ecosystems.

This collaboration is expected to enhance conservation efforts while promoting tourism and sustainable development.

Strengthening Strategic Ties

The visit by the US lawmakers signals continued diplomatic engagement between Nairobi and Washington, particularly at a time when Kenya is positioning itself as a regional leader in economic growth and security cooperation.

President Ruto reiterated Kenya’s commitment to strengthening ties with the United States, noting that the partnership remains key to advancing shared goals across Africa and beyond.

The discussions are expected to pave the way for further cooperation agreements in the coming months.
