How to register for eTIMS in Kenya

Date:

As Kenya continues to digitise its tax systems, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has made it mandatory for many businesses to adopt the Electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS). This system is designed to improve tax compliance, enhance transparency, and streamline invoicing processes.

If you are a business owner or service provider, registering for eTIMS is now a crucial step. Here’s a clear guide on how to get started.

What is eTIMS?

eTIMS (Electronic Tax Invoice Management System) is a digital platform introduced by KRA to enable businesses to generate and transmit tax invoices electronically. It replaces older systems and helps the government monitor transactions in real time.

Step-by-Step Process to Register for eTIMS

1. Visit the eTIMS Portal

Start by accessing the official eTIMS portal via the KRA website. Ensure you have a stable internet connection and your business details ready.

2. Sign Up Using Your KRA PIN

Click on the “Sign Up” option and enter your KRA Personal Identification Number (PIN). A One-Time Password (OTP) will be sent to your registered mobile number for verification.

3. Verify and Create Login Credentials

Enter the OTP received and proceed to create a secure password. This will be used to access your eTIMS account in the future.

4. Fill in Business Details

Complete the online registration form by providing accurate business information. This includes your business name, type, contact details, and nature of operations.

5. Upload Required Documents

You will be required to upload:

  • A copy of the business owner’s or director’s national ID
  • A signed commitment form (available on the portal)

Make sure all documents are clear and correctly filled to avoid delays.

6. Submit for Approval

After completing the application, submit it for review. A KRA officer will verify your details and documents before approval.

7. Install and Activate eTIMS

Once approved, you can proceed to install and start using eTIMS. Depending on your business needs, you can choose from different system options.

Available eTIMS Access Options

KRA provides multiple ways to access eTIMS:

  • Web Portal (Online eTIMS): Ideal for small businesses and service providers
  • Client Software: Suitable for businesses with Point of Sale (POS) systems
  • USSD Option: Dial *222# for basic registration and access via mobile phone

Important Tips for Businesses

Before registering, ensure your KRA PIN is active and linked to your correct phone number. Double-check all details before submission to avoid rejection. Businesses should also familiarise themselves with eTIMS usage after registration to remain compliant with tax regulations.

Why eTIMS Matters

The adoption of eTIMS is part of Kenya’s broader effort to modernise tax administration. It helps reduce tax evasion, simplifies record-keeping, and ensures businesses remain compliant with KRA requirements.

Failure to register and use eTIMS where required may result in penalties, making it essential for businesses to act promptly.
