County supports learners through expanded bursary programme

Date:

Turkana County has disbursed bursaries to more than 20,000 students in a major push to improve access to education and reduce financial barriers for families.

The programme targets learners in secondary schools, colleges, and universities, with county officials saying the initiative is aimed at ensuring no student drops out due to lack of school fees.

Speaking during the disbursement exercise, county leaders said education remains a top priority in efforts to uplift livelihoods and drive long-term development.

“We are committed to ensuring that every child in Turkana has an opportunity to learn and succeed,” a county official said.

Focus on vulnerable and needy students

Officials said the bursary allocation prioritizes vulnerable and needy students, including those from low-income households and marginalized communities.

The county government noted that many families in the region face economic challenges that make it difficult to sustain education without support.

“This programme is designed to cushion families and ensure continuity in learning,” the official added.

Education stakeholders say such initiatives are critical in improving enrolment and retention rates, particularly in underserved regions.

Expanding access to higher education

Beyond secondary education, the bursaries also support students pursuing higher education in colleges and universities, helping to expand access to skills development and employment opportunities.

County officials said investing in education is key to building a skilled workforce capable of contributing to economic growth.

“We are investing in the future of Turkana by supporting our young people to acquire knowledge and skills,” the official said.

The programme is expected to ease financial strain on households while enabling more students to complete their studies.

Commitment to education development

The bursary initiative forms part of broader efforts by Turkana County Government to strengthen the education sector and improve learning outcomes.

Officials said the county will continue to allocate resources towards education, including infrastructure development and support programmes.

Residents have welcomed the initiative, noting that it will help reduce school dropout rates and improve access to education across the county.

“Education is the most powerful tool we can give our children,” the official said.
