Gachagua demands four million Kamba votes from Kalonzo for opposition ticket

Date:

Kenya’s opposition politics are getting more complicated after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka would need to marshal at least four million votes from Ukambani to earn the coalition’s presidential ticket in 2027.

Speaking during in Kathiani, Gachagua framed the contest in unapologetically arithmetic terms, arguing that opposition unity must be anchored in demonstrable voter strength rather than political seniority or personal profile. While praising Kalonzo as an experienced and credible national leader, he insisted that only hard numbers would determine who can credibly challenge President William Ruto.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT

“Leadership profile alone is not enough,” Gachagua said during the broadcast. “If Kalonzo wants to be the opposition flagbearer, he must show that Ukambani can produce at least four million votes. That is the minimum required to compete seriously.”

The remarks immediately drew attention to the electoral realities of Ukambani, a region comprising Machakos, Kitui and Makueni counties. Based on the most recent Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) voter register, the three counties collectively account for about 2.6 million registered voters — roughly 1.1 million in Machakos, about 900,000 in Kitui and just over 600,000 in Makueni. Even with exceptionally high turnout and near-unanimous regional backing, the figures fall well short of the four million benchmark Gachagua outlined.

VOTING BLOC

Gachagua acknowledged the scale of the challenge but said the threshold was intentionally demanding. He argued that any opposition presidential candidate must demonstrate the capacity to mobilise support beyond their ethnic and regional strongholds. In that sense, he said, the four-million-vote requirement should be read as a test of expansion rather than a literal count confined to Ukambani alone.

He insisted the same standard would apply to all aspirants seeking the opposition ticket. To underline the point, Gachagua pointed to Mt Kenya, which he described as the single largest voting bloc in the country. He claimed to command up to six million votes from the region — an assertion contested by rivals but reflective of Mt Kenya’s numerical weight, which accounts for more than a third of Kenya’s registered electorate.

Kalonzo, a former vice-president and veteran of coalition politics, has long styled himself as a consensus candidate capable of holding together a broad opposition alliance. His allies argue that his appeal extends beyond Ukambani, particularly among moderate and older voters who value stability and experience. Critics, however, say his electoral base has remained largely regional.

GRASSROOTS

Political analysts say Gachagua’s comments, delivered via radio to a wide grassroots audience, were as much about shaping internal negotiations as setting a numeric bar. “This is leverage politics,” said one Nairobi-based analyst. “By emphasising voter numbers on air, he is forcing aspirants to confront the arithmetic of winning.”
