Govt assures public of stable fuel supply amid global market uncertainty

Date:

Kenya has assured consumers and businesses that the country remains well supplied with petroleum products despite ongoing uncertainty in global energy markets.

Petroleum Principal Secretary Kello Harsama said current fuel reserves are sufficient to meet national demand for more than a month, while additional shipments are already on their way to replenish stocks and maintain uninterrupted supply.

The assurance comes as concerns continue to grow globally over energy security, supply chain disruptions, and fluctuating oil prices driven by geopolitical and economic developments.

Government Confident in Fuel Availability

Speaking during a tour of major petroleum facilities in Mombasa, Harsama emphasized that Kenya’s fuel supply system remains resilient and capable of meeting both local and regional demand.

According to the PS, strategic planning, coordinated fuel imports, and investments in key infrastructure have enabled the country to maintain stable fuel availability even during periods of international market volatility.

He noted that authorities are closely monitoring supply levels to ensure consumers are protected from potential shortages and unexpected disruptions.

Strategic Infrastructure Supports Supply Chain

During the inspection, Harsama visited several critical energy facilities that play a central role in the country’s petroleum distribution network.

Among the sites inspected were the Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited (KPRL), Kipevu Oil Terminal 2 (KOT 2), the VTTI terminal, and Taifa Gas facilities in Dongo Kundu.

The PS described KOT 2 as one of the country’s most important fuel-handling facilities, noting that it facilitates the efficient importation and distribution of petroleum products across Kenya and neighboring East African countries.

Officials said the infrastructure has significantly improved fuel handling capacity and strengthened Kenya’s position as a regional energy hub.

Investments Target Long-Term Energy Security

The government is also expanding investments in petroleum storage and transportation systems to improve supply reliability in the future.

Harsama said ongoing projects are aimed at increasing the country’s ability to withstand supply shocks while supporting rising fuel demand from households, businesses, and industries.

The initiatives form part of a broader strategy to enhance energy resilience and ensure that petroleum products remain readily available across the country.

Officials believe modernized infrastructure will help reduce logistical challenges and improve efficiency throughout the supply chain.

LPG Expansion Gains Momentum

Beyond conventional fuels, the government is accelerating efforts to expand liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) infrastructure as part of its clean energy agenda.

Authorities are increasing gas storage and distribution capacity to support growing demand for LPG, which is increasingly being adopted as a cleaner alternative to traditional cooking fuels.

The expansion is expected to improve access to affordable cooking energy, strengthen energy security, and contribute to environmental sustainability goals.

As Kenya’s energy needs continue to grow, officials say continued investment in fuel import facilities, storage terminals, and transportation networks will remain critical to maintaining stable supplies and supporting economic growth.

The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring reliable fuel availability while safeguarding consumers from supply disruptions and sharp market shocks.
