Inside ODM’s high-stakes parliamentary group meeting that approved UDA coalition talks

Date:

A high-level Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Parliamentary Group meeting has reshaped the party’s leadership structure and political trajectory ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The closed-door session, presided over by Party Leader Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga, brought together ODM MPs and senators for what leaders described as frank and far-reaching deliberations.

National Assembly Minority Leader Hon. Junet Mohamed said members unanimously approved and upheld all recent decisions taken by the Central Committee and the National Executive Committee (NEC).

“We have held an ODM Party Joint Parliamentary Group Meeting presided by Party Leader Hon. Dr. Oburu Oginga. After frank deliberations, members approved and upheld all recent decisions taken by the Central Committee and the National Executive Committee,” Junet said.

Oburu’s installation and sifuna’s suspension

At the centre of the meeting was the formal endorsement of the emergency NEC decision to install Dr. Oburu Oginga as Party Leader.

The Parliamentary Group also backed the NEC resolution to suspend Hon. Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General, consolidating the authority of the party’s top decision-making organs.

Junet underscored party unity following the resolutions.

“We stand fully united in our commitment to build and strengthen ODM. Our path forward is clear: champion good governance, uphold accountability, and fight for social justice for all Kenyans,” he said.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga echoed the sentiment, describing the meeting as cohesive and forward-looking.

“Productive deliberations at today’s Joint Parliamentary Group Meeting, led by our Party Leader, Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga. We stand fully united in our commitment to build and strengthen ODM,” Wanga said.

UDA talks, Azimio exit and 2027 strategy

In a move likely to reshape Kenya’s political alliances, the PG endorsed the Central Committee’s decision to support the ongoing working arrangement between ODM and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) under the Broad-based Government framework.

Lawmakers further mandated the party to engage in structured negotiations with UDA and other like-minded parties ahead of the 2027 polls.

Junet confirmed that ODM MPs will hold a joint Parliamentary Group meeting with UDA next Tuesday to receive a briefing on the implementation status of a 10-point agenda underpinning the cooperation.

The meeting also endorsed the decision for ODM to formally pull out of the Azimio coalition and approved plans to convene a Special National Delegates Convention on March 27, 2027.

Additionally, the PG backed efforts to pursue compensation for victims of past election-related human rights abuses, undertaking to work with partners to ensure the matter is addressed urgently and conclusively.

The high-stakes meeting signals a decisive moment for ODM, as the party consolidates its leadership, redefines alliances and charts a new course toward the 2027 General Election.
