The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has invited members of the public to submit comments on a proposed 19.5-kilometre road network intended to improve traffic flow around the Talanta Sports City Stadium and the Bomas International Convention Centre (BICC).
The proposal, submitted by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), is currently undergoing review after NEMA received the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Study Report in accordance with the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA).
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, NEMA said the proposed infrastructure project seeks to enhance road capacity and ease congestion around the two major developments, which are expected to attract large numbers of visitors once completed.
“The Kenya Urban Roads Authority proposes an approximately 19.5-kilometre road network to improve traffic circulation and road capacity in support of the Talanta Sports City Stadium and the Bomas International Convention Centre,” the authority said.
According to the proposal, the planned roads will traverse Dagoretti South, Kibra and Lang’ata constituencies within Nairobi County.
The project is designed to improve accessibility to the stadium and convention centre while supporting the expected increase in traffic generated by the two facilities.
Public participation underway
NEMA has made the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment report available for public inspection at its headquarters along Popo Road, off Mombasa Road in Nairobi, as well as at the Nairobi County Director of Environment’s office. The report is also accessible through the authority’s official website.
The environmental regulator has asked interested members of the public to submit written or oral comments within 30 days from the date of publication to inform its final decision on the project.
“NEMA invites members of the public to submit oral or written comments within thirty days to assist the Authority in the decision-making process,” the notice states.
Feedback can also be submitted electronically through the authority’s official email address.
Talanta Stadium and BICC projects nearing completion
The proposed road network comes as construction of the Talanta Sports City Stadium approaches completion ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Government progress reports released in late July indicated that the stadium project had reached more than 92 per cent completion, with authorities maintaining that the facility remains on schedule despite several adjustments to its completion timeline since construction began.
Meanwhile, work on the Bomas International Convention Centre is also progressing. The main convention facility has surpassed 86 per cent completion, while Phase One of the overall development is reported to be more than 43 per cent complete.
The government now expects the convention complex to be completed by the end of December 2026 after earlier completion targets were revised during construction.
