The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has urged Kenyans traveling long distances for the holidays to plan their journeys in advance to allow adequate travel time.

The Authority implored motorists intending to use busy highways such as Nairobi-Nakuru road that are currently congested, to consider using alternative routes.
“They are advised to strictly adhere to all traffic rules, observe posted speed limits and avoid speeding,” Acting KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said in a December 21 transport advisory.
To prevent accidents that have claimed over 30 lives in a fortnight, motorists have been asked to observe and obey traffic signs, maintain lane discipline, avoid overlapping, and reckless overtaking.
Official data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) shows 4,458 road fatalities were reported between January and December 2, 2025, compared to 4,311 in 2024
“Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators and drivers are reminded to adhere to approved passenger capacity limits, and observe designated pick-up and drop-off points, pack trucks on the designated truck pack,” he directed.
Further, the Authority asked drivers to take rest before embarking on their journeys, and remain sober and fit to drive at all times.
“The Authority remains committed to ensure a safe, smooth, and secure holiday travel experience for all road users,” the advisory added.
The Authority reminded all road users that road safety is a shared responsibility and must therefore, exercise patience, courtesy and caution while on the road.
This as some of the Kenyans asked the Authority to consider sharing hourly updates on the highways.
“Let them issue hourly updates on traffic situations on major roads,” Ezekiel Kabue suggested.
