Kenya’s push to strengthen its digital economy was on display at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 in Barcelona, Spain, where Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Stephen Isaboke joined global technology leaders to discuss the future of connectivity and digital innovation.
The global forum brought together policymakers, technology companies and innovators to explore emerging trends shaping digital ecosystems, including agentic artificial intelligence and next-generation 6G-ready infrastructure.
Isaboke participated in several high-level discussions focusing on how advanced technologies are transforming economies, improving public services and strengthening digital infrastructure around the world.
Exploring next-generation railway communication systems
During a tour of the exhibition area, the Principal Secretary inspected the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), a next-generation communications platform designed to replace older railway communication systems.
The technology uses advanced 5G capabilities to enable real-time communication between trains and railway control centres, improving operational efficiency and safety across rail transport networks.
Speaking during the visit, Isaboke said such technologies could play a significant role in improving Kenya’s transport systems and supporting the development of integrated logistics corridors.
“Next-generation communication systems will play a critical role in improving transport safety, operational efficiency and digital integration of logistics infrastructure,” he said.
Kenya’s push for digital transformation
Isaboke noted that Kenya is positioning itself to harness emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and advanced connectivity to accelerate economic transformation and modernise key sectors.
He said investments in digital infrastructure remain central to the government’s strategy of strengthening innovation and expanding opportunities within the technology sector.
Kenya’s participation in the summit also reflects the country’s broader ambition to strengthen its role as a regional digital hub while promoting inclusive access to digital services.
Digital Superhighway initiative
Kenya’s engagement at the congress aligns with the government’s Digital Superhighway initiative, which seeks to expand fibre-optic connectivity, establish digital hubs and increase public Wi-Fi access across the country.
The initiative also focuses on enhancing technology-driven public services and supporting the country’s transition toward a knowledge-based digital economy.
The Mobile World Congress is one of the world’s largest technology events, bringing together global leaders in telecommunications, innovation and digital policy to examine how emerging technologies can drive economic growth and digital inclusion.
Isaboke attended the summit alongside officials from the Communications Authority of Kenya led by board chair Charles Karondo, as well as Huawei Kenya’s Deputy CEO for Government Affairs Adam Lane.
