University of Nairobi opens multiple pathways for KCSE C Plain students in 2026

Date:

Students who scored a KCSE Mean Grade of C (Plain) can now access multiple academic pathways at the University of Nairobi (UoN), marking a major shift in how higher education institutions are expanding access to university training and degree progression.

Under new and existing academic frameworks rolled out between 2025 and 2026, UoN has structured flexible entry routes that allow C Plain students to begin with certificates or diplomas and gradually progress to full bachelor’s degree programmes.

Direct diploma entry pathways

Students with a C Plain can now enroll directly into a wide range of diploma programmes across several faculties.

These include Business and Management courses such as Diploma in Business Management, Human Resource Management, Purchasing and Supplies Management, and Public Relations.

In Education, UoN offers programmes such as the Diploma in Teacher Education in Emergencies, aligning with updated national teacher training requirements that now allow TTC entry at C Plain.

The Agriculture and Science sector offers diplomas in Agricultural Sciences, Crop Protection, and Animal Health and Production, supporting Kenya’s food security and agribusiness workforce needs.

Other professional courses available include Diploma in Information Technology, Social Work and Community Development, Criminology and Social Order, Project Planning and Management, and Youth in Development Work.

These diploma programmes serve as structured academic foundations for long-term university progression.

Certificate–Diploma–Degree progression model

For students who do not meet specific subject requirements for diplomas, UoN offers a certificate-to-diploma pathway.

Under this model, students can enroll in certificate programmes using C- or C Plain, progress to diplomas, and later transition into degree programmes after successful completion.

This creates a vertical academic ladder, allowing learners to build qualifications step by step rather than being locked out of university education based on one exam outcome.

Degree access through bridge qualifications

Although direct degree entry still requires a KCSE C+, C Plain holders can access degree programmes through additional qualifications.

These include holding a recognized diploma in a related field, professional certifications such as CPA II, CPS II, or CIPS for Commerce and Arts degrees, and teaching qualifications such as P1 training with post-secondary education, which allow entry into Bachelor of Education programmes.

UoN has also begun rolling out Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) pathways, which focus on practical skills, industry alignment, and flexible assessments, creating new access points for students with diverse academic backgrounds.

Application structure and intakes

The University of Nairobi operates three major intakes annually: September/October (main intake), December/January, and May/June.

Applications are submitted through the UoN Online Application Portal, with a standard application fee of KSh 3,000 for Kenyan applicants.

A new model of University access

Education experts say the new structure reflects a national shift toward inclusive higher education, skills-based training, and flexible learning models.

Rather than treating a KCSE grade as a permanent barrier, the system now allows students to progress academically through structured pathways, ensuring that talent, persistence, and training matter more than a single exam score.

For thousands of KCSE C Plain students, the University of Nairobi’s new pathways represent not just access to diplomas but a clear, realistic road to a university degree and long-term career development.
