Kenya Railways has raised concern over a growing online scam involving fake social media accounts impersonating the corporation and targeting unsuspecting passengers seeking Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) services.
In a public notice issued on Monday, May 25, the corporation warned that several fraudulent TikTok pages are falsely claiming to offer Madaraka Express booking assistance and customer support services.
Fake TikTok accounts flagged
Among the accounts identified were pages operating under names such as “SGR Online Booking Services,” “SGR Booking Services,” and “StandardGauge Railway Helpline.”
According to Kenya Railways, the accounts display phone numbers and pretend to provide official ticket booking support despite having no connection to the corporation.
“Please note that these pages are managed by fraudsters who are out to con unsuspecting members of the public,” Kenya Railways warned.
The corporation clarified that it does not operate any official TikTok account and urged Kenyans to avoid interacting with any profiles claiming to represent the agency on the platform.
Passengers urged to use official channels
Kenya Railways advised travelers to rely only on verified communication channels when seeking assistance or booking SGR tickets.
Passengers were directed to use the corporation’s official telephone numbers 0709907000 and 0709907555, or contact the agency through its official email addresses.
The corporation cautioned that fraudsters are increasingly exploiting social media platforms to target passengers and steal money or personal information.
Crackdown on online scams
The latest warning comes just weeks after Kenya Railways distanced itself from a fake recruitment advertisement circulating online.
The fraudulent job advert claimed the corporation was hiring for dozens of positions, including managers, graduate trainees, drivers, receptionists and cleaners.
Applicants were instructed to send applications to a Gmail address, raising suspicion among members of the public.
Kenya Railways dismissed the advert as fake and warned job seekers against sharing personal information with unauthorized individuals or platforms.
“The advert circulating online alleging that Kenya Railways is recruiting staff is fake. Kenya Railways has not advertised any jobs through the circulated notice,” the corporation stated.
Public advised to remain vigilant
The corporation has now urged Kenyans to verify information through official government communication channels before making payments, booking services or applying for jobs.
Kenya Railways further reminded the public that all official vacancies and customer service updates are published through verified platforms and recognized government communication channels.
The warning comes amid a rise in digital fraud cases in Kenya, with scammers increasingly using fake social media accounts, SMS messages and phishing links to target unsuspecting victims online.
