President William Ruto has appointed Major General John Maison Nkoimo as the new Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army, elevating one of the military’s most experienced field commanders to one of the service’s highest leadership positions.
The appointment, announced as part of a broader Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) leadership reshuffle, sees Major General Nkoimo take over from Major General Mohamed Nur Hassan, who has retired from military service.
For many within military circles, Nkoimo’s rise to the position comes after more than three decades of service marked by frontline deployments, peacekeeping missions, strategic command roles and military leadership training.
From Kilgoris to the Top Ranks of KDF
Born on October 20, 1969, in Kilgoris, Trans Mara, Major General Nkoimo‘s journey to military leadership began after completing his education at Uasin Gishu High School.
Before joining the armed forces, he briefly worked as an untrained teacher, a path that would soon give way to a distinguished military career.
In 1990, he enlisted in the Kenya Army as a cadet officer and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant before being posted to the elite 20 Parachute Battalion in Gilgil.
His early military years exposed him to some of the toughest operational environments both within and outside Kenya.
International Peacekeeping Experience
Among the defining moments of his career was his deployment to the former Yugoslavia as part of a United Nations peacekeeping mission.
Serving as a platoon commander in the Buffer Zone on Mount Dinara, Nkoimo gained international operational experience in a conflict environment that tested military leadership, diplomacy and crisis management.
The deployment helped shape a reputation that would later see him entrusted with increasingly complex command responsibilities.
A Commander Forged in Kenya’s Harshest Frontlines
Throughout his military career, Nkoimo served in some of Kenya’s most challenging operational zones, including Lokichoggio, Kainuk along the Turkana-Pokot border and Samburu.
His experience commanding troops in rugged and often volatile regions earned him recognition as a disciplined and battle-tested officer capable of leading under pressure.
Military observers have often associated his leadership style with operational readiness, troop welfare and mission effectiveness.
Strategic Leadership Roles
In recent years, Major General Nkoimo has held several senior appointments within the Kenya Defence Forces.
He served as Commandant of the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) in Karen, one of the country’s premier military training institutions responsible for preparing senior officers for strategic leadership positions.
He later took over as General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command, where he oversaw military operations across a vast region while coordinating security preparedness, disaster response initiatives and inter-agency collaboration.
His tenure at Central Command also saw him play a key role in regional military cooperation efforts, particularly within the East African Community.
Regional Security and Counter-Terrorism Efforts
Beyond domestic operations, Nkoimo has been actively involved in strengthening regional security partnerships.
He has participated in East African Community military engagements and has consistently advocated for greater cooperation among regional armed forces in combating terrorism and emerging security threats.
His leadership has also extended into military healthcare management, having served as Chairman of the Nairobi Regional Hospital Board of Management.
New Role as Deputy Commander Kenya Army
As Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army, Major General Nkoimo will now be responsible for supporting the overall command, administration and operational readiness of the country’s largest military service.
The appointment places him among the most senior officers in the Kenya Defence Forces and positions him at the centre of strategic military planning and national security operations.
His promotion reflects growing confidence in his leadership abilities and extensive operational experience accumulated over more than 35 years in uniform.
With a career spanning peacekeeping missions, frontline deployments, military education and strategic command appointments, Major General John Maison Nkoimo now assumes one of the most influential roles in Kenya’s military establishment as the country continues modernising and strengthening its defence capabilities.
