The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that several regions across the country are likely to experience rainfall and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, even as dry conditions continue to dominate much of Kenya.
In its latest weather forecast, Kenya Met indicated that rainfall is expected in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, while most other regions will experience sunny and dry conditions.
The department also cautioned residents in some counties to prepare for strong winds and intermittent cold weather.
Rain Expected in Rift Valley and Lake Region
According to the forecast, counties within the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and parts of the Rift Valley are expected to experience morning sunshine followed by afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

- Busia
- Bungoma
- Kisumu
- Kisii
- Nyamira
- Migori
- Siaya
- Homa Bay
- Kericho
- Nandi
- Bomet
- Nakuru
- Elgeyo Marakwet
- West Pokot
- Baringo
- Uasin Gishu
- Trans Nzoia
- Narok
Weather experts say some locations could experience isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours.
Nairobi Among Areas Forecast to Receive Light Rains
Residents of Nairobi and neighbouring counties have also been advised to expect cloudy conditions and occasional rainfall.
Kenya Met forecasts partly cloudy skies overnight, with morning cloud cover gradually giving way to sunny intervals and light rainfall in a few areas.
Counties expected to experience these conditions include:
- Nairobi
- Kiambu
- Nyeri
- Murang’a
- Kirinyaga
- Embu
- Meru
- Nyandarua
- Laikipia
- Tharaka Nithi
Afternoon showers are expected in isolated areas across the region.
Cold Conditions to Persist
The weather agency has also warned that intermittent cold and cloudy conditions are likely to persist in sections of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, as well as parts of the southeastern lowlands.
The conditions are expected to maintain the chilly weather currently being experienced in several regions, particularly during morning and evening hours.
Northern Kenya to Remain Mostly Dry
In contrast, counties in North Eastern and North Western Kenya are expected to remain largely dry throughout the forecast period.
Sunny intervals are expected to dominate weather conditions across:
- Turkana
- Marsabit
- Garissa
- Mandera
- Wajir
- Isiolo
The department, however, warned that strong winds could affect some of these areas.
Strong Winds Expected in Several Counties
Kenya Met has issued an advisory for strong southerly and southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second) in parts of northern, eastern and coastal Kenya.
Counties likely to experience the strongest winds include:
- Turkana
- Marsabit
- Garissa
- Mandera
- Wajir
- Isiolo
- Kitui
- Makueni
The strong winds could also affect parts of the Coast region.
Coastal Areas to Remain Mostly Sunny
Meanwhile, residents along the Coast should expect generally sunny weather throughout the day.
Counties covered under the forecast include:
- Mombasa
- Kilifi
- Kwale
- Lamu
- Tana River
While conditions will remain largely dry, Kenya Met noted that light morning showers could occur in isolated parts of the South Coast.
Public Advised to Monitor Weather Updates
The meteorological department has urged Kenyans to continue monitoring official weather updates, particularly in areas expected to receive thunderstorms and strong winds.
The agency said changing weather patterns may result in localized rainfall, reduced visibility and occasional travel disruptions in some regions.
