The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is expanding Kenya’s voter register ahead of the 2027 General Election, with millions of new voters already registered and more expected to join before polling day.
As of August 20, 2026, a total of 2,936,516 Kenyans had registered as voters, according to the electoral commission. IEBC has set its sights on building a register of approximately 28.5 million voters for the 2027 election.
The target would represent a significant increase from the 22.1 million voters registered for the 2022 General Election.

How many Kenyans have registered?
IEBC says nearly 2.94 million Kenyans had completed voter registration by August 20.

IEBC has emphasised that having an accurate voter register is essential to the credibility of an election. The commission says the process is aimed at ensuring that eligible voters are properly captured while reducing problems such as duplicate registrations and entries for deceased persons.

Why is IEBC targeting 28.5 million voters?
Kenya had about 22.1 million registered voters in 2022. For 2027, IEBC expects the number to rise to about 28.5 million.
The higher target reflects the number of young Kenyans who have become eligible to vote since the last election, as well as efforts to register eligible citizens who were previously left out of the electoral roll.

What about Kenyans living abroad?
IEBC is also widening opportunities for Kenyans in the diaspora to register and participate in elections.
The commission plans to expand diaspora voter registration from 12 countries to 26 countries.

What happens after registration?
Registering as a voter is only one part of preparing the electoral roll.

When will the 2027 election preparations intensify?
IEBC has already published key timelines for the 2027 election.
Public officers intending to contest elective positions will be required to resign by February 10, 2027.
Political parties are expected to complete their primaries and resolve related disputes by May 8, 2027.
The registration of candidates will then take place between May 29 and June 11, 2027, depending on the elective position.
The official campaign period will begin after candidate registration and will run until August 7, 2027, three days before the election.
IEBC has warned that campaigning outside the legally prescribed period will be unlawful.
