You can download your KCSE certificate online through KNEC’s e-certificate portal at ecertificate.knec.ac.ke. The service currently covers candidates who sat the examination from 1989 to 2025, according to the portal.
To get your digital certificate, create an applicant account, verify your email, complete your profile, enter your examination details and pay the processing charge. You can then download the certificate as a PDF.
Here is how to do it, what to prepare and what to check if you get stuck.
What you need before you start
Have the following ready:
- Your full KCSE index number.
- The year you sat the examination.
- An email address you can access.
- Your personal details, including your date of birth, phone number and national ID number where applicable.
- A phone or computer with internet access.
- A payment method accepted at the portal’s checkout.
Use your own email address when registering. You will need access to it to receive the verification code and sign in. The registration page specifically asks applicants to confirm that they are using a personal email address.
How to download your KCSE certificate online
1. Open the official KNEC portal
Visit ecertificate.knec.ac.ke.
Select Sign Up/Register, then choose Applicant (Student/Alumni). The separate Verifier account is for organisations checking certificates.
2. Register and verify your email
Enter your name and email address, then follow the instructions to receive a one-time password, or OTP.
Open your email and enter the code on the portal. The code is valid for 10 minutes; request another if it expires.
If you already have an account, use the sign-in option instead.
3. Complete your profile
Provide the requested personal information, including your citizenship, full name, date of birth, phone number and national identification details where applicable.
Check each entry carefully before submitting.
4. Enter your KCSE examination details
Select Generate e-Certificate and enter:
- Examination type: KCSE.
- Index number: Your examination index number.
- Examination year: The year you sat KCSE.
The system checks the details against KNEC’s records.
Use your result slip or an existing certificate copy to check the index number. If you cannot remember it, ask your former school to help retrieve your examination details.
5. Check the charge and make payment
Once your details have been verified, follow the payment instructions displayed on the portal.
Check the final amount before approving payment, and keep the receipt or transaction reference. Published fee figures differ, so use the amount shown for your application at checkout.
6. Download and save your certificate
After payment is confirmed, download the available PDF certificate.
Save a copy on your device and another in a secure backup location. Open the file to confirm that it downloaded correctly before closing the page.
Does the digital KCSE certificate expire?
KNEC’s portal states that the e-certificate does not expire. It also says the certificate is emailed after payment and can be downloaded again from the portal free of charge for six months.
That six-month period concerns access to free repeat downloads. It does not mean your saved certificate expires. Keep the PDF safely so you can use it later.
What if something goes wrong?
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| The email code has not arrived | Check your spam or junk folder and confirm that you entered the correct email address. Request a fresh code if necessary. |
| Your examination details are rejected | Recheck the index number, examination year and examination type against your records. |
| Payment went through but no certificate appears | Check your account again and retain the transaction reference. Contact KNEC before making another payment. |
| The downloaded certificate has incorrect details | Contact KNEC for guidance on correction. Do not alter the PDF yourself. |
For assistance, the e-certificate portal lists info@knec.ac.ke and +254 720 741 001. Include a clear description of the problem and any application or payment reference. Never send your payment PIN or email verification code.
Can you download it if you lost the paper certificate?
Yes. KNEC’s e-certificate portal explicitly provides for people who have lost their original certificates. You can use the digital service for the examination years currently available.
KNEC also has a separate Query Management Information System (QMIS) for services including certification letters for lost certificates, confirmation of results and biodata amendments. A certification-letter application is a different service from downloading an e-certificate.
Is an online results printout the same as a certificate?
No. Checking your examination results and generating an e-certificate are separate processes. For a digital certificate, use the e-certificate portal and complete the certificate-generation process.
If you want to collect the paper certificate, KNEC says regular candidates receive certificates through their schools, while private candidates collect them through the Sub-County Directors of Education.
