The decision by Azimio la Umoja to adopt the name Ukombozi Alliance has opened a new phase in the opposition’s efforts to organise for the 2027 General Election, with competing political formations now taking shape around different leaders.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced the rebranding on Monday, saying parties within the coalition had unanimously agreed to operate under the new name.
The alliance will be guided by the slogan “One Term, One Team, One Coalition”, as opposition leaders seek to present a united political front ahead of the elections.
But the rebranding comes at a time when another opposition formation, Linda Mwananchi, is also working on its own political vehicle, creating a complicated landscape in which alliances, parties and individual presidential ambitions are developing simultaneously.
Two political structures, one opposition space
Kalonzo said the decision to adopt the Ukombozi name was partly driven by the need to avoid delays as political parties prepare for the 2027 contest.
He said Linda Mwananchi was still engaging with the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties over its political arrangements, adding that the limited time remaining before the election made it necessary for the wider opposition to keep moving.
“We understand that Linda Mwananchi are waiting for a decision from the Registrar of Political Parties. We understand that time is of the essence, and we are only trying to save time,” Kalonzo said.
The statement comes as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and his allies prepare to launch a separate political party associated with the Ukombozi name.
The Star reported that Sifuna is expected to unveil his party on October 1, with the party expected to serve as his political vehicle.
The parallel developments mean that the opposition is now dealing with more than the question of which leaders should work together. It is also negotiating which parties and coalitions will carry different political ambitions into the election.
Kalonzo insists the structures can coexist
Despite the potential overlap, Kalonzo said the difference in political vehicles should not automatically translate into a split.
“When you see us here, we are one team, and we have one purpose. As long as we are one team at the end, then there is no problem with that,” he said.
The remarks underline the wider challenge facing the opposition: maintaining cooperation while individual leaders and political groups build their own organisations.
Earlier reports have shown disagreements within Linda Mwananchi itself over the political vehicle the movement should use, with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino backing the Mwananchi Party while other leaders have supported the Ukombozi option.
Uhuru’s role adds another layer
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is also expected to play a role in the newly rebranded alliance.
Kalonzo said Uhuru would chair the Ukombozi Alliance and was expected to convene a Jubilee Party meeting before the necessary changes were communicated to the coalition.
The development follows a High Court ruling that upheld restrictions on retired presidents holding formal leadership positions in political parties beyond six months after leaving office. The ruling did not prevent former presidents from belonging to political parties or participating in political activities.
Kalonzo has maintained that Uhuru can remain politically active even as he relinquishes his formal party leadership position.
The bigger test before 2027
The rebranding therefore goes beyond a change of name.
The opposition is entering a period in which political parties must define their structures, negotiate coalitions and determine how individual presidential ambitions fit within broader alliances.
The Ukombozi Alliance has now established its new identity, while Linda Mwananchi is preparing its own political vehicle. Other opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, remain part of the wider opposition calculations.
Whether these formations eventually converge, negotiate a coalition or pursue separate electoral paths will become clearer as the 2027 election approaches.
For now, the latest developments show an opposition still working to turn broad calls for unity into concrete political structures capable of carrying its competing ambitions into the ballot.
