Construction of a new Tana River Bridge and its approach roads along the Ukasi–Garissa–Modika route is progressing steadily, with the Sh1.7 billion project now 55 per cent complete. The bridge, which links Garissa Town and Tana River County, is being built to replace the decades-old structure that has become worn out and unsafe for motorists and pedestrians.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, accompanied by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and other local leaders, toured the site on Monday to inspect the ongoing works. The leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress, saying construction was on schedule and expected to be completed by December 2025.
Boost economy
Kindiki described the bridge as a critical infrastructure investment that would enhance safety, spur trade, and strengthen the economic ties between northern and coastal Kenya. “This project is a lifeline for the people of Garissa and Tana River. It will ensure uninterrupted movement of goods and services, even during the rainy season when the old bridge often posed serious risks,” he said.
The Deputy President also underscored the government’s commitment to equitable infrastructure development across all regions, saying the new bridge symbolised the state’s resolve to modernise neglected transport corridors.
CS Duale, who hails from the region, noted that the project would bring lasting economic and social benefits. “The bridge will improve connectivity, support farmers, traders, and students, and make it easier for residents to access essential services such as healthcare and markets,” he said.
Infrastructure agenda
Engineers at the site said the bridge incorporates modern design standards to withstand flooding and heavy traffic. Once completed, it will replace the aging structure that has long been considered a safety hazard.
The new Tana River Bridge is part of the government’s broader infrastructure agenda aimed at upgrading key transport routes to promote regional integration and boost trade. Officials said the project’s completion will transform the Ukasi–Garissa–Modika corridor into a reliable gateway linking the northern and coastal regions of Kenya.
