KJSEA senior school placement, revision explained

Placement for Grade 9 learners who sat the 2025 The Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) will commence on Monday 15 December where will students will be placed in various senior schools of choice.

The learners are set to be placed across Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences, Arts and Sports pathways in accordance with their performance and selection from earlier choices.

During selection, the Grade 9 learners selected a total of 12 schools. Nine of the selected schools fall in the boarding category where 3 are from the candidate’s home county while 6 were from other counties. The remaining 3 were day schools from candidate’s home sub-county.

PLACEMENT

Top 6 learners per gender in each STEM track per sub-county, Top 3 learners per gender in each Social Science and Top 2 learners per gender in each Arts and Sports Science track per sub-county will all be placed to boarding schools of their choice.

Candidates with Achievement Level averaging 7 and 8 per track will also be placed in boarding schools of their choice.

Schools with vacancies are expected to declare through their respective county directors of education allowing learners who wish to change schools to make requests through the heads of junior schools at least 2 weeks before the official Grade 10 reporting date.

According to the government, priority shall be given to those who had earlier selected the schools they are requesting for, with approvals based on senior schools’ documented capacity.

COMPULSORY

The Ministry of Education confirmed that parents and learners will have a chance to revise both pathways and schools they had selected after the release of the the KJSEA results.

Senior School students will take four compulsory core subjects and choose three elective subjects based on their interests and desired career path.

The four compulsory subjects are English, Kiswahili, Core Mathematics / Essential Mathematics and Community Service Learning (CSL).

“We shall give them an opportunity to revise. If you are given a school and you don’t like it, you will digitally revise it”, said Education PS Julius Bitok in an interview.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the selection would be in accordance with learner performance and selection pathways, emphasizing that the entire exercise will be conducted digitally to ensure efficiency, transparency, and speed.

The 1,130,459 learners who sat the 2025 KJSEA will report to 9,540 Senior School institutions across the country from 12th January 2026.

ADMISSION LETTERS

Learners and parents can check the placement through the link: https://selection.education.go.ke/my-selections where they can enter the Assessment Number to view assigned Senior School pathways and institutions or through SMS by sending the Assessment Number to 22263

Admission letters/joining instructions shall be accessed online using the learner’s assessment number where all schools, both public and private shall admit Grade 10 through KEMIS

“Competency Based Education is not about exam or assessments. It is about the competency for the child. It is about what the child can do best. The results are meant to assist learners and parents to self assess and understand the learning areas that the student is strong and would like to pursue”, Education PS Bitok said.

KJSEA examinations were conducted between October 27 and November 3, and results released on Thursday, December 11.
