Dedan Kimathi University of Technology has announced scholarship opportunities for postgraduate students pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The scholarships are being funded through the African Development Bank’s Support to Higher Education Science and Technology (HEST) Phase II Project, which is being implemented through Kenya’s State Department for Higher Education.
The university will award scholarships to eligible students enrolled in selected Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes.
Applicants interested in the opportunities have until August 25, 2026, at 5pm to submit their applications.
Which programmes are covered?
The scholarship programme has been divided into two categories covering several engineering, technology and science disciplines.
The Master’s category includes the following programmes:
- MSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering, specialising in Microelectronic Engineering
- MSc Mechanical Engineering, specialising in Machine Tools
- MSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering, specialising in Power Systems Engineering
- MSc Computer Science
- MSc Food Science and Technology
- MSc Industrial Biochemistry
The available Master’s scholarships are distributed among graduate assistants, technologists and technicians, depending on the programme and available slots.
The university has also set aside scholarships for doctoral students.
Under the PhD category, the opportunities cover:
- PhD Electrical and Electronic Engineering, specialising in Power Systems Engineering
- PhD Civil and Environmental Engineering, specialising in Geotechnical Engineering
One scholarship is available for each of the two listed PhD programmes.
Who can apply?
The scholarships are intended for students pursuing the specified postgraduate programmes at DeKUT and who meet the university’s academic and programme-specific eligibility requirements.
Prospective applicants have been advised to carefully review the full requirements before submitting their applications.
The university has also encouraged persons with disabilities who meet the requirements to apply for the scholarship opportunities.

AfDB-backed programme
The scholarships are part of the broader HEST Phase II initiative, through which the Kenyan government accessed funding from the African Development Bank to strengthen higher education, science and technology training.
DeKUT is among the institutions benefiting from the initiative, with part of the funding being directed towards supporting students in selected postgraduate STEM programmes.
The scholarships come at a time when universities and governments across Africa are placing greater emphasis on developing advanced skills in engineering, technology, computing and other scientific disciplines.
Students interested in the DeKUT opportunities are therefore encouraged to obtain the official application forms, confirm that they meet the specific academic requirements and submit their applications before the August 25 deadline.
