Wajir expands education gains through global INSPIRED Programme partnerships

Date:

Wajir County is accelerating efforts to improve learning outcomes through strengthened international partnerships under the INSPIRED Programme, in a move aimed at transforming education access and quality in the region.

The initiative has received renewed momentum following a high-level visit by a multi-agency delegation that included representatives from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Education Development Trust, Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, Think Equal and the Wajir Peace and Development Agency.

New infrastructure boosts learning environment

A key milestone of the visit was the handover of upgraded classrooms and improved water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities at Township and Furaha Primary Schools.

The improvements are expected to create a safer, more inclusive and child-friendly environment for learners, many of whom have historically studied under challenging conditions.

Education stakeholders say the upgraded infrastructure will not only enhance comfort and safety but also improve attendance and overall academic performance among pupils.

Global partnerships drive education reforms

Speaking during the event, Eduarda Mendonca-Gray underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing education gaps in marginalized regions.

“We believe that every child deserves access to quality education in a safe environment. Through the INSPIRED Programme, we are working closely with local partners to ensure that no child is left behind,” she said.

The INSPIRED Programme, funded by the UK government through FCDO and implemented by Education Development Trust, is currently supporting 264 learning centres across Wajir County.

Kenan Yigit also reaffirmed Turkey’s support, noting that education remains a key pillar in driving sustainable development.

“Education is a powerful tool for long-term development. Our partnership in Wajir reflects our shared commitment to empowering communities through practical and sustainable interventions,” he said.

Focus on holistic child development

Beyond infrastructure, the programme is also investing in learners’ emotional and social wellbeing. During the visit, partners flagged off Social Emotional Learning (SEL) materials funded by Think Equal.

Leslee Udwin emphasized the importance of nurturing emotional intelligence alongside academic achievement.

“Education must go beyond academics. By equipping children with social and emotional skills, we are preparing them to lead healthier, more empathetic and more resilient lives,” she said.

Local stakeholders welcomed the initiative, with Abdinasir Saman noting that such collaborations are key to long-term progress.

“This partnership reflects what we can achieve when communities and global partners work together to create better learning environments for our children,” he said.

County officials expressed optimism that continued collaboration will accelerate progress in the education sector, strengthen foundational learning and help shape a brighter future for learners across Wajir.
