The development of the Bomas International Convention Complex (BICC) in Lang’ata is set to redefine Nairobi as a key regional and global hub for high-level engagements, trade, and diplomacy, according to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.
Speaking on the progress of the project, Omollo emphasised its broader national significance, stating that it goes beyond infrastructure development.
“The development of the Bomas International Convention Complex is repositioning Nairobi not just as a capital city, but as a regional socio-economic hub and gateway for global commerce, diplomacy and high-level engagements,” he said.
A Landmark MICE Facility
The BICC is being developed as a state-of-the-art Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) facility, a move that signals Kenya’s ambition to compete globally in hosting international events.
Omollo noted that the complex reflects the country’s growing stature on the global stage.
“As an ultra-modern MICE facility, the project signals Kenya’s growing stature in hosting world-class international events,” he said.
Once complete, the convention centre will be among the largest in East and Central Africa, with the capacity to host up to 11,000 delegates across 35 meeting rooms.
It will also feature a 5,000-seat main auditorium and a 3,500-seat secondary hall, designed to accommodate large-scale conferences and summits.
Boost to Jobs and Inclusion
Beyond its global outlook, the project is already creating employment opportunities for thousands of Kenyans.
“The project is being executed by a workforce of over 3,000 personnel operating in continuous shifts, with a deliberate focus on inclusive job creation,” Omollo said.
He added that the initiative is prioritising youth and women, engaging them across skilled, semi-skilled, and support roles.
VIP Facilities and Integrated Development
The complex will include a Presidential Pavilion capable of hosting up to 30 heads of state, underlining its strategic importance in international diplomacy.
In addition, an integrated hospitality zone will feature hotels, retail outlets, and other complementary facilities, including an animal orphanage.
Supporting Infrastructure Taking Shape
To support the facility, key infrastructure projects are advancing simultaneously. Among them is the Bomas Ring Road, which is expected to improve access and ease traffic flow from Lang’ata Road.
“Supporting infrastructure is advancing in tandem, including the Bomas Ring Road, with foundation works underway to enhance access and streamline traffic circulation,” Omollo noted.
The complex will also be connected to the nearby Raila Odinga International Stadium, allowing seamless movement of delegates and visitors during major events.
Additionally, a structured parking system at the Kenya Wildlife Service precinct will help manage traffic, with controlled transit into the facility via the ring road network.
Security and Global Standards
Omollo highlighted that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is playing a key role in ensuring the facility meets international standards for safety and efficiency.
“We are enhancing operational readiness by coordinating secure event management systems, facilitating seamless VIP movement and integrating smart surveillance and access control measures,” he said.
He added that these measures will ensure the BICC operates as a safe, efficient, and globally competitive convention hub.
A Strategic National Investment
As Kenya continues to position itself as a destination for global conferences and investment, the BICC stands out as a flagship project expected to drive tourism, business travel, and economic growth.
“This is not just a building; it is a strategic investment in Kenya’s future as a global meeting point,” Omollo said.
