Flood alert issued as heavy rains intensify across Coast and lowland regions

Date:

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has issued a nationwide flood advisory, warning of heightened risks as heavy rainfall is expected to intensify over the weekend, particularly in the Coastal, Northeastern and Southeastern lowland regions.

In a statement shared through its official platforms, the Ministry said government rescue and recovery agencies have been placed on high alert to respond to any emergencies arising from the ongoing rains.

“Government rescue and recovery agencies are on high alert as rainfall is expected to intensify over the weekend, particularly along the Coast and in the Northeastern and Southeastern lowlands,” the Ministry said.

Authorities noted that the current weather conditions have already caused widespread disruption in several parts of the country. Cases of displaced families, collapsed homes and flooded public facilities have been reported, alongside damage to critical infrastructure.

“Current weather conditions have already led to significant impacts, including displacement of residents, collapse of houses, flooding of public facilities, and damage to electricity infrastructure,” the Ministry warned.

Public urged to exercise extreme caution

The government is now urging Kenyans to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to avoid loss of life and property as the rains persist.

“The public is advised to exercise extreme caution due to the heightened risk of flooding, strong winds, and lightning strikes,” the Ministry said.

In its advisory, the Ministry cautioned residents against attempting to cross flooded areas, particularly at night when visibility is poor and risks are significantly higher.

“Do not attempt to walk or swim in water bodies or floodwaters, especially at night,” the advisory reads.

Coastal residents were also warned to avoid open beaches during periods of strong winds and heavy rainfall.

“Members of the public should immediately move away from open beaches during heavy rainfall and strong winds,” the Ministry added.

Danger from damaged power infrastructure

The advisory further highlighted the danger posed by damaged electricity infrastructure, which has already been reported in some flood-hit areas.

“Stay away from and report damaged electricity poles and fallen cables, that may have live current to local authorities and Kenya Power,” the Ministry warned.

Officials say such hazards pose a serious risk of electrocution, especially in flooded zones where water can conduct electricity over wide areas.

Emergency response on standby

The government says all relevant agencies, including disaster response teams, security personnel and local administrators, are on standby to coordinate rescue and relief efforts where necessary.

The Ministry reiterated that timely reporting of emergencies and strict adherence to safety advisories could significantly reduce the impact of the ongoing heavy rains across vulnerable regions.

Residents in high-risk areas have been urged to remain alert, follow official updates and cooperate with authorities in case of evacuation or emergency interventions.

With the rains expected to continue over the coming days, authorities emphasize that public awareness and preparedness will be key in minimizing damage and saving lives.
