Speaking during a development tour in Kibra Constituency, Nairobi, the Head of State said the government will step in to fast-track the long-delayed Kenya Railways Corporation Housing Project.

“The State Department of Housing will take over and complete the stalled 900 units of the Kenya Railways Corporation Housing Project, Kibra Constituency, Nairobi,” Ruto said.

Allocation to Kibra Residents

The President noted that once completed, the housing units will be allocated to local residents in line with the government’s Affordable Housing Programme.

“Consequently, the houses will be allocated to the residents of Kibra under the terms of the Affordable Housing Programme,” he added.

The move is expected to address the housing deficit in one of Nairobi’s most densely populated areas, while also improving living conditions for thousands of families.

Expansion with 3,000 New Units

Beyond completing the stalled project, Ruto revealed plans to significantly scale up housing development on the same parcel of land.

“At the same time, we will develop an additional 3,000 housing units on the same Kenya Railways land, expanding access to decent homes and accelerating the transformation of Kibra into a modern estate,” he said.

The additional units are part of the government’s broader agenda to provide affordable, quality housing across urban centres while upgrading informal settlements.

Boost to Kibra’s Transformation

The President emphasized that the project will not only provide shelter but also drive social and economic transformation in Kibra.

The initiative is expected to create jobs, stimulate local businesses, and improve infrastructure in the area, aligning with national efforts to modernize urban settlements.

Investment in Education

In addition to housing, Ruto highlighted the government’s commitment to improving education infrastructure in Kibra.

“Handed over eight new classrooms at Raila Education Centre, Kibra Constituency, Nairobi County,” he said.

The new classrooms are expected to ease congestion and enhance the learning environment for students in the area.

Integrated Development Approach

The combined focus on housing and education reflects the government’s integrated approach to development, targeting both living conditions and access to quality education.

With the revival of the stalled housing project and the planned expansion, Kibra is set to undergo a significant transformation, positioning it as a model for urban renewal under the Affordable Housing Programme.
