The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather alert warning of increased rainfall intensity in several parts of the country over the next 24 hours.
In its latest forecast, Kenya Met said the enhanced rainfall is expected between 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, and 9:00 p.m. on Monday, May 4, particularly in the Highlands both west and east of the Rift Valley.
Areas Expected to Receive Heavy Rainfall
Counties in the Highlands west of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and Rift Valley are set to experience showers and thunderstorms in multiple areas.
These include:
Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori and Narok.
Residents in these regions should expect rainfall tonight, followed by sunny intervals in the morning and afternoon thunderstorms.
Nairobi, Central Region to Experience Showers
In the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County, light showers are expected in a few areas tonight.
Other counties in this region include Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia and Nyandarua.
Kenya Met forecasts cloudy conditions in the morning, with possible rainfall later in the day.
Strong Winds Expected in Several Regions
The department also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) in parts of:
- Northwestern Kenya (Turkana, Samburu)
- Northeastern Kenya (Marsabit, Garissa, Isiolo)
- Southeastern lowlands (Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta)
These areas will experience partly cloudy conditions with isolated showers, especially in the evening and morning hours.
Coastal and Southeastern Forecast
In the coastal region, light showers are expected in a few places throughout the forecast period.
Meanwhile, counties in the southeastern lowlands—Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Kajiado and Taita Taveta—will experience partly cloudy conditions with a chance of showers, alongside strong winds in some areas.
Advisory to the Public
Kenya Met has urged residents in affected regions to remain vigilant, particularly in areas prone to flooding and strong winds.
The department advised the public to stay updated with official weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
