Ithookwe airstrip upgrade set to boost connectivity and economic growth in Kitui

Date:

Transport infrastructure continues to play a major role in Kenya’s economic development by improving the movement of people, goods, and services across the country.

One of the latest projects expected to transform regional connectivity is the reconstruction and modernization of the Ithookwe Airstrip in Kitui County, which is now nearing completion.

The upgraded airstrip is expected to improve accessibility within the region while opening new economic opportunities for investors, businesses, tourists, and local communities.

Modern Runway and Improved Facilities

The project has delivered a newly paved 950-metre asphalt runway identified as Runway 05/23. The runway, which measures about 15 metres wide, has undergone grading, compaction, and surface finishing to meet aviation standards.

The modernization project also includes a new terminal building equipped with a VIP reception area and lounges designed for dignitaries, investors, and business travellers.

Additional infrastructure completed at the facility includes:

  • A secure perimeter fence
  • A bitumen-standard parking area
  • An internal access driveway
  • An expanded aircraft apron for improved maneuverability

The upgraded apron is expected to improve aircraft parking and support smooth ground operations for light aircraft and helicopters.

Reduced Travel Time

The modernized airstrip is already improving travel efficiency by significantly reducing travel time between Kitui and major towns.

Flights from Ithookwe to Nairobi and Mombasa are expected to take about 35 minutes, offering a faster alternative to lengthy and sometimes unpredictable road travel.

Its strategic location also positions the airstrip as a key regional link connecting Nairobi, Mombasa, Garissa, and Wajir.

Boost for Tourism and Investment

The improved facility is expected to attract mining investors and increase tourism activities within Kitui County.

Tourists visiting the South Kitui Game Reserve are likely to benefit from easier and faster access to the area, while the airstrip is also expected to support emergency medical evacuation services.

Officials believe the upgraded infrastructure will encourage regular commercial light-aircraft operations, creating opportunities for trade, tourism, and local business growth.

The modern terminal building at Ithookwe Airstrip includes VIP reception areas and lounges for dignitaries and business travellers.

Security Measures Enhanced

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has played a central role in implementing and operationalising the project.

Authorities say the department has focused on strengthening security through controlled and closely monitored entry and exit points to ensure safe and efficient operations at the facility.

The government views the Ithookwe Airstrip project as part of broader efforts to strengthen transport infrastructure in underserved regions and unlock economic potential across the country.
