Long-underserved communities in Baringo and Nakuru counties are set to benefit from improved transport links as the upgrading of the Kamkunji–Kisanana–Kipkitur–Mugurin–Lake Bogoria–Mogotio Loop Road progresses.
The 78-kilometre corridor is expected to improve the movement of people and goods while opening up communities to wider markets, according to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.
Omollo said the road project is being implemented by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) and has recorded significant progress on several sections.
“Road infrastructure is a critical enabler of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), particularly in previously underserved regions where poor connectivity has constrained trade, investment and access to markets,” Omollo said.
30 kilometres of Mogotio-Lake Bogoria road completed
One of the sections recording notable progress is the 38-kilometre Mogotio–Lake Bogoria stretch.
Omollo said 30 kilometres of the section have already been completed, while construction continues on the Mogotio–Kisanana–Kamkunji section.
Once fully upgraded, the corridor is expected to make it easier for farmers and livestock keepers to transport their products to markets.
The improved road network will also reduce travel times and strengthen connections between communities across the two counties.
Road upgrade expected to boost Lake Bogoria tourism
The project is also expected to support tourism around Lake Bogoria by improving access to some of the region’s major attractions.
Omollo said better roads would strengthen connections to Lake Bogoria’s hot springs and its well-known flamingo habitat.
The improved accessibility could create opportunities for businesses operating in tourism, hospitality and other local economic activities.
“The improved corridor will ease the movement of farm produce and livestock, shorten travel times and connect communities to wider markets,” Omollo said.
He added that the road would “strengthen access to the Lake Bogoria tourism circuit, including its hot springs and renowned flamingo habitat, creating new opportunities for businesses and local livelihoods.”
Bomet targets 500km of upgraded roads
The road development drive extends beyond Baringo and Nakuru, with Bomet Town also undergoing a major infrastructure upgrade.
According to Omollo, 10 kilometres of key roads in Bomet are being upgraded to bitumen standards under the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA).
The works include earthworks, drainage systems and construction of pedestrian walkways.
The Bomet Town project forms part of a wider county programme targeting more than 500 kilometres of rural and urban roads.
Omollo said the upgraded network will improve connections between residential areas, businesses and public facilities, while also supporting agricultural trade.
The roads are also expected to improve access to the newly chartered Bomet University and ease movement of traders to the upcoming Mulot and Kapkwen modern markets.
The ongoing projects form part of wider government efforts to improve road connectivity and strengthen infrastructure in underserved areas, with the expected benefits extending to trade, agriculture, tourism and access to essential services.
