The Government has officially launched the construction of a 10,000-seater stadium in Thika, marking a major boost to sports infrastructure in Kiambu County.

Youth, Creative Economy and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, alongside Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, officiated the groundbreaking ceremony, describing the project as a transformative investment for both sports and the local economy.

“The Government has injected KSh 850 million into this project, which will be completed within 10 months,” Mvurya said during the ceremony. “Beyond providing a modern sporting facility, the stadium will open up local economies, create employment opportunities, nurture talent, and position Thika as a key sporting hub in the region.”

No demolitions, leaders urged to support development

Amid concerns from local traders, Mvurya reassured residents that the project would proceed without displacing businesses.

“We have assured local traders and the County Government of Kiambu County that no demolitions will be conducted,” he stated. “We urge leaders and residents alike to shun divisive politics and instead rally behind the development agenda of H.E President William Ruto.”

The assurance was aimed at calming fears and reinforcing government commitment to inclusive development.

Boosting grassroots talent in Kiambu

The Thika Stadium is part of a broader national push to strengthen grassroots sports infrastructure.

Mvurya noted that Kiambu County currently has three stadium projects under implementation by the National Government, in addition to three constituency sports academies designed to nurture young talent.

“Kiambu County currently has three stadium projects under implementation by the National Government, alongside three constituency sports academies aimed at strengthening grassroots talent development and creating structured pathways for our youth,” he said.

The initiative aligns with the government’s wider Talanta Hela programme, which seeks to identify and support sports and creative talent across the country.

Leaders present

The event was attended by Kiambu County Deputy Governor Rosemary Kirika, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, Defence Principal Secretary Dr Patrick Mariru, Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a, local leaders and senior government officials.

Once complete, the 10,000-seater facility is expected to enhance local sporting activities, stimulate small businesses around the stadium and provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent at regional and national levels.

Construction is set to run on an accelerated timeline, with completion targeted within ten months.
