The government has committed KSh2 billion to complete remaining sections of the Mau Mau roads, in a move aimed at improving connectivity and unlocking economic potential across the Mt Kenya region.
Speaking during a development tour in Murang’a County, President William Ruto said the investment is part of a broader plan to strengthen infrastructure and support local economies.
“We are committing KSh2 billion towards the completion of the remaining sections of Mau Mau roads, enhancing connectivity across the Mt Kenya region,” President Ruto said.
New road project to boost local economy
The President also launched the construction of the 18.5-kilometre Kiriko–Kagumoini–Gitugi–Chui–Karugia road in Mathioya Constituency, a project valued at KSh897 million.
According to the government, the road is expected to ease transportation challenges for residents while improving access to markets for farmers and traders.
“This stretch, being built at a cost of KSh897 million, is expected to ease transportation and boost local trade,” President Ruto said.
Focus on connecting rural communities
President Ruto emphasized that the government’s infrastructure agenda is focused on ensuring rural communities are not left behind, noting that roads play a key role in economic transformation.
“At the same time, we continue connecting villages to towns and farmers to markets in Murang’a as we do across the country,” he said.
The project is expected to benefit residents by reducing travel time, lowering transport costs, and improving access to essential services.
Residents briefed on development plans
During the visit, the President also held a public engagement session with residents of Kagumoini, where he outlined ongoing and planned development programmes in the region.
“Engaged residents of Kagumo-ini and updated them on our ongoing development programmes in the region,” President Ruto said.
Local leaders and residents welcomed the project, expressing optimism that improved infrastructure would open up the area for trade, investment, and better service delivery.
The road construction forms part of the government’s nationwide infrastructure push aimed at driving economic growth, improving mobility, and strengthening rural livelihoods.
