Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has announced his resignation from the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), citing differences with party leader Eugene Wamalwa over the party’s future direction.
Natembeya said he had proposed expanding DAP-K into a national political movement but claimed the proposal was rejected, prompting his decision to leave the party.
“I requested Wamalwa to grant me the opportunity to expand DAP-K into a broader national movement. Unfortunately, he declined. Consequently, I have no other option but to quit,” Natembeya said during an interview on Wednesday.
The governor revealed that he and his allies are now working on launching a new political party that will seek to unite the Western Kenya region while building support across the country.
“We shall come with a new party that will unite Western Kenya while embracing a national outlook,” he said.
Natembeya Endorses Edwin Sifuna
Natembeya also declared his support for Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna‘s presidential bid in the 2027 General Election.
The announcement follows a political meeting held at Natembeya’s home in Trans Nzoia, where Sifuna and leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi movement met with community elders from the Western region to discuss their political strategy ahead of the next election.
According to Natembeya, the leaders agreed that Sifuna should contest the presidency while he seeks a second term as Trans Nzoia governor.
“It’s an opportunity for the Mulembe people to produce a presidential candidate through Sifuna. I will support him for president in 2027, while I will still run for governor of Trans Nzoia. I will remain on the ground because I still have unfinished business,” he said.
Western Kenya Political Mobilisation
Political strategist Pauline Njoroge said the Linda Mwananchi movement will begin a series of political rallies later this month to rally support for Sifuna.
The campaign is expected to start with a rally in Trans Nzoia on July 25 before moving to Bungoma County on July 26.
Natembeya said the region has the numbers to influence the outcome of the 2027 presidential election if its leaders unite behind one candidate.
“My duty is to consolidate the entire Western to deliver the four million votes as Sifuna complements the national level to deliver the presidency,” he said.
The governor maintained that his focus will remain on strengthening political unity in Western Kenya while supporting Sifuna’s national campaign ahead of the 2027 polls.
