The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a Heavy Rainfall Advisory (Update No. 2), warning that downpours exceeding 20mm within 24 hours are expected to continue in multiple regions across the country from February 25 through March 3, 2026.
The advisory, released at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, February 25, takes effect from 4:00 PM the same day and will remain valid until 9:00 PM on March 3, 2026.
Heavy Rains to persist in Western and Rift Valley Regions
In a statement, the Department indicated that heavy rainfall currently being experienced will persist from February 25 to 28, with possible expansion into parts of Northeastern Kenya.
However, rainfall intensity is projected to reduce beginning March 1 over the Southeastern lowlands, the Coastal region, and the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi.
Despite this expected reduction, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley are likely to continue receiving heavy rainfall through March 3.
Counties and Regions on alert
Areas of concern include parts of:
- Western Kenya
- The Lake Victoria Basin
- Rift Valley counties
- Central Highlands
- Parts of Eastern Kenya
- Coastal region
- Sections of Northeastern counties, including Isiolo, Marsabit and Garissa
Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant due to the risk of flooding, flash floods, reduced visibility and lightning strikes.
Public safety advisory
The Kenya Meteorological Department has cautioned members of the public to avoid crossing flooded roads or walking through moving water, noting that floodwaters may appear even in areas where rainfall has not been locally heavy.
Residents are also advised not to shelter under trees or near grilled windows during storms to minimize exposure to lightning.
The Department said it will continue to monitor weather patterns and issue updates should there be any changes.
Kenyans are encouraged to follow official Kenya Meteorological Department communication platforms for timely updates and forecasts.
