The government has rolled out a raft of multi-billion shilling development projects in Trans Nzoia County aimed at improving livelihoods, boosting agricultural productivity, and enhancing access to essential services.
Speaking during a public sensitization forum in Maili Saba, Saboti Constituency on Tuesday, March 24, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said the initiatives are part of a broader plan to empower citizens and grow household incomes.
“The Government has rolled out major transformative projects in Trans Nzoia County, to enhance livelihoods, empower citizens and improve household incomes,” Kindiki said.

Multi-billion investments in infrastructure and housing
Kindiki outlined significant investments in infrastructure, revealing that KSh 38 billion has been allocated for the construction of 326 kilometres of roads across the county.
In addition, KSh 15.5 billion has been set aside for public housing, fresh produce markets, and student accommodation projects aimed at improving living standards and supporting local economies.
He also announced that KSh 750 million will go towards rural electrification, targeting at least 9,066 households.
“38 billion shillings has been allocated for construction of 326 kilometers of roads, 15.5 billion shillings for building public housing, fresh produce markets and student accommodation, and 750 million shillings for rural electrification of an additional 9,066 households, among other projects,” he stated.

Fertilizer subsidy boosts maize production
The Deputy President attributed increased maize production in Trans Nzoia to the government’s fertilizer subsidy programme, which has significantly reduced input costs for farmers.
“Subsidizing fertilizer from 7,000 shillings to 2,500 shillings a bag has resulted in bumper maize harvest from this bread basket of Kenya,” Kindiki said.
The county, often referred to as Kenya’s grain basket, has recorded improved yields, strengthening food security and farmer incomes.
Healthcare programme expansion
Kindiki also highlighted progress in the Universal Healthcare Programme, noting that millions of Kenyans have already been covered under the scheme.
“The Universal Healthcare Programme which has already insured 31.1 million Kenyans including 400,000 residents of Trans Nzoia County, is being finetuned through enhanced benefit packages, steady supply of drugs and other medical commodities and the placement of specialized medical equipment in health facilities,” he said.
He added that the government is working to improve service delivery in health facilities to ensure citizens fully benefit from the programme.
The Deputy President said the Maili Saba forum was part of ongoing efforts to update wananchi on government programmes and gather feedback.
“Held a Public Sensitization Event… to update residents of Trans Nzoia County of the various initiatives being undertaken by the Government for the benefit of the people,” he noted.
The event was attended by Environment CS Deborah Barasa, Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang, Woman Representative Lilian Siyoi, Kiminini MP Kakai Bissau, Members of County Assembly, and local residents.

Focus on economic empowerment
Kindiki emphasized that the projects are designed to stimulate economic growth at the grassroots level, particularly in agriculture, housing, and infrastructure.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to equitable development, noting that regions like Trans Nzoia will continue to benefit from targeted investments.
