LIVE JUNE 2026 UPDATE: The government has officially withdrawn KPLC’s proposed July 2026 tariff hike! Base electricity rates will remain frozen, meaning the massive 14% to 32% price increase originally planned for next month has been averted.

Why your “Monthly Usage” matters more than you think
- 0–100 Units: The “Lifeline” bracket for low-income households or small apartments.
- Over 100 Units: A premium rate applies.
Token History: Why 1,000 Shillings feels “random”
The results you get at the start of the month often differ from the end of the month.
Fixed Charges: Some levies are charged only on your first purchase of the month.
KPLC calculates your electricity costs cumulatively every calendar month. Because the 100-unit Lifeline cushion remains intact, a single large purchase can actually split across two different tariff brackets.
For example, if you buy tokens worth KSh 2,000 at the beginning of the month, you will receive roughly 113 units. Your first 100 units are billed at the heavily discounted Lifeline rate (KSh 12.23 base), while the remaining 13 units dynamically “jump” into the more expensive Ordinary bracket (KSh 16.45 base). Our calculator handles this complex, cross-over math automatically so you always know exactly what you are paying for.
NOTE: if you already bought more than 100 units earlier in the same calendar month, spending KSh 1,000 will net them roughly 43.7 units instead of 55.1 units, because KPLC will bypass the Lifeline bracket entirely.
KPLC Estimated Tokens and Cost Breakdown (June 2026)
The table below assumes this is your first purchase of the month (meaning you start at the cheaper Lifeline tariff for your first 100 units).
| Amount Paid (KSh) | Estimated Tokens (kWh) | Active Tariff Bracket | What Happens to Your Money? |
| KSh 100 | 5.7 Units | Lifeline (0 – 100 Units) | 100% of this purchase enjoys the cheap KSh 12.23 base rate. No fixed inflation buffer is added under KSh 500. |
| KSh 500 | 28.4 Units | Lifeline (0 – 100 Units) | Ideal for low-income earners. Safely remains in the Lifeline bracket with a lower overall cost per unit. |
| KSh 1,000 | 55.1 Units | Lifeline (0 – 100 Units) | Even at KSh 1,000, you stay under the 100-unit threshold, completely avoiding the higher Ordinary tariff rates. |
| KSh 5,000 | 233.5 Units | Mixed / Crossed Over | The Bracket Jump: Your first 100 units are billed cheaply at the Lifeline rate. The remaining 133.5 units automatically jump to the Ordinary Tariff (KSh 16.45 bas |
