Members of the National Assembly Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works have commended the Diani Modern Market project in Kwale County, describing it as a major boost to trade, employment and economic transformation in the region.

During an inspection tour of government development projects in Kwale on Thursday, lawmakers said the market demonstrates how modern public infrastructure can directly improve livelihoods and support inclusive economic growth.
Traders operating at the facility praised the project, saying it has significantly improved hygiene standards, storage of fresh produce and overall business operations through upgraded trading spaces and modern cold storage facilities.
Acting Committee Chairperson Hon. Rindikiri Mugambi said the project reflects the government’s commitment to creating dignified and secure trading spaces for small-scale traders.
“This market is going to uplift traders economically and provide a clean and secure environment for biashara. It is encouraging to see wananchi already appreciating the impact this project will have on their lives,” said Hon. Mugambi.
Diani market nears completion
The Diani Modern Market project, valued at more than Ksh193 million, is currently 99 percent complete.
The facility includes commercial stalls, a modern market block, a borehole and supporting civil works aimed at improving access to clean water and sanitation services.
Leaders noted that the project is expected to strengthen local commerce while improving working conditions for traders and vendors in the coastal town.
Affordable Housing projects creating jobs
The committee also toured the Diani White House Affordable Housing Project in Msambweni Constituency, where MPs observed ongoing construction works and engagement of local youth through internship and apprenticeship opportunities.
Lawmakers further praised the inclusion of local Jua Kali artisans, who are supplying door frames and other construction fittings for the project.
“This programme is not just about houses. It is about creating jobs, transferring skills to young people and opening opportunities for local artisans and suppliers,” said Hon. Daniel Manduku.
The housing project, which sits on a one-acre parcel of land, is expected to deliver 154 housing units by July 2026 at an estimated cost of Ksh544 million.
The development will also feature amenities including a clubhouse, waste treatment systems and garbage collection infrastructure.
According to the committee, the project has incorporated Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, including support for a local dispensary, primary school and laboratory.
Focus on urban renewal and infrastructure
Earlier, the lawmakers inspected the Matuga Affordable Housing Project, which consists of more than 200 housing units alongside integrated social amenities such as underground water storage and waste management systems.

In Kombani, MPs also conducted a drive-through inspection of roads upgraded to bitumen standards under the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Programme (KISIP).
The committee noted that the improved road network has enhanced accessibility to settlements while boosting business activity and connectivity within the area.
Lawmakers said the ongoing housing and infrastructure projects are expected to stimulate urban renewal, create employment opportunities and improve living standards for residents across Kwale County.
