President William Ruto has held high-level discussions with OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman aimed at strengthening cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) and accelerating Kenya’s digital transformation agenda.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the G7 Leaders’ Summit, where the two leaders explored opportunities to expand AI education, build digital skills, and position Kenya as a leading technology hub in Africa.
According to President Ruto, the discussions focused on how emerging technologies can be leveraged to create jobs, enhance innovation, and prepare young people for the rapidly evolving global digital economy.
Nairobi Proposed as Home of OpenAI Academy in Eastern Africa
One of the key proposals discussed during the meeting was the establishment of the first OpenAI Academy initiative in Eastern Africa, with Nairobi being considered as its regional base.
The proposed academy would focus on expanding access to AI education, supporting educators and learners, and equipping young people with the skills required to thrive in technology-driven industries.
Ruto said the initiative would strengthen Kenya’s growing reputation as a centre for innovation and digital talent on the continent.
“We explored potential collaboration through establishing Nairobi as the home of the first OpenAI Academy initiative in Eastern Africa, expanding AI education, strengthening digital skills, supporting educators and learners, and reinforcing Kenya’s position as a leading hub for AI talent and innovation,” Ruto said.
Focus on Youth Opportunities and Innovation
The President emphasized the need to ensure that artificial intelligence creates meaningful opportunities for young people rather than widening existing economic gaps.
He noted that Kenya’s youthful population, vibrant technology ecosystem, and growing digital infrastructure provide a strong foundation for AI-driven growth and entrepreneurship.
“I underscored the importance of harnessing emerging technologies to create opportunities for young people, drive innovation and ensure Africa plays a meaningful role in shaping the future digital economy,” Ruto stated.
The discussions come as governments around the world increasingly invest in AI research, digital skills development, and technology partnerships to remain competitive in the global economy.
Kenya Strengthens Position as Regional Tech Hub
Kenya has emerged as one of Africa’s leading technology destinations, attracting international technology firms, startups, and innovation-focused investments.
The government has been pursuing policies aimed at expanding internet connectivity, promoting digital literacy, and supporting innovation ecosystems that can create employment opportunities for young people.
Analysts say collaboration with global technology leaders such as OpenAI could help accelerate Kenya’s ambitions to become a regional centre for AI development, research, and talent cultivation.
The proposed partnership could also open new opportunities for students, educators, developers, and entrepreneurs seeking to participate in the rapidly growing AI sector.
Growing Global Interest in Africa’s Digital Future
The engagement between President Ruto and OpenAI reflects growing international interest in Africa’s digital transformation potential.
With increasing investment in technology infrastructure, digital skills, and innovation ecosystems across the continent, African countries are seeking greater participation in shaping the future of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
Should the proposed OpenAI Academy be established in Nairobi, it would mark a significant milestone for Kenya’s technology sector and further cement the country’s position as a gateway for AI innovation in Eastern Africa.
