Kenya railways restores Nyahururu freight line after 46 years, boosting regional trade

Date:

Kenya Railways has marked a major milestone in the country’s transport sector with the resumption of freight services along the Gilgil-Nyahururu railway line, ending a 46-year hiatus on the historic corridor.

The revival was officially launched through the transportation of 396 tonnes of government-subsidized fertilizer from Athi River Railway Station to National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots in Ol Kalou and Nyahururu.

According to Kenya Railways, the cargo movement represents the first freight train operation on the route since services were discontinued decades ago.

“The transportation of subsidized fertilizer to Ol Kalou and Nyahururu marks the revival of freight services on the Gilgil-Nyahururu branch line after 46 years,” the corporation said in a statement.

The shipment was transported using 11 Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) wagons, underscoring renewed efforts to restore rail transport as a key driver of economic development and regional connectivity.

Support for Farmers and Agricultural Growth

The restored line is expected to significantly benefit farmers across Nyandarua and Laikipia counties, regions known for large-scale agricultural production.

The fertilizer distribution initiative is aimed at supporting the cultivation of key crops including potatoes, cabbages, carrots, peas, wheat and other horticultural produce that contribute substantially to the local economy.

Kenya Railways noted that efficient rail transport will help improve access to farming inputs while reducing logistics costs for agricultural stakeholders.

Growing Interest From Industry Players

The reopening of the railway corridor has already attracted attention from several major companies seeking cost-effective transportation solutions.

Among the firms expressing interest in utilizing the line are fertilizer supplier OCP Kenya, Bamburi Cement PLC, New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (New KCC), and Autoports Freight Terminals Ltd.

The corporation said the railway also presents opportunities for transporting construction materials such as sand and building stones, as well as livestock and other agricultural products.

Industry players view the restoration as a strategic move that could strengthen supply chains and improve market access for businesses operating in the region.

Passenger Services Set for Comeback

Beyond freight transport, Kenya Railways plans to reintroduce passenger services along the corridor, providing residents with an affordable and reliable alternative means of transport.

The corporation said the return of passenger trains is expected to improve mobility, enhance access to social services and markets, and stimulate tourism in towns located along the route.

“The return of rail services is expected to improve mobility, enhance access to markets and social services, promote tourism, and strengthen regional integration,” Kenya Railways stated.

Economic Benefits Expected

Kenya Railways projects that the restoration of the Gilgil-Nyahururu line will lower transportation costs, attract new investments, create employment opportunities and support sustainable economic growth across the region.

The move forms part of broader efforts by the government to revitalize dormant railway infrastructure and leverage rail transport as a catalyst for economic transformation.

With freight trains now back on the tracks after nearly half a century, the Nyahururu corridor is poised to regain its place as a critical link in Kenya’s transportation and logistics network.
