A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) housing project in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, has reached 98 per cent completion, bringing hundreds of military personnel closer to accessing new homes.
The project at Kwambuzi Military Camp comprises 790 housing units and is part of a wider government programme to construct 3,069 homes for KDF personnel across the country.
Principal Secretary for Defence Patrick Mariru announced the progress after inspecting the construction site, saying the project is now in its final stages ahead of the expected handover in the coming weeks.
What remains before handover?
According to Mariru, the main construction works have been completed, with contractors now undertaking final preparations.
These include deep cleaning and other finishing works to prepare the housing units for occupation.
“The housing project, being implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, is part of the 3,069 housing units being constructed across the country for KDF personnel,” Mariru said.
He added that the project had reached 98 per cent completion as preparations continued for its handover.
Mariru conducted the inspection alongside Brigadier Titus Sokobe, the Chief of Special Projects at Defence Headquarters.
Part of a wider KDF housing programme
The Nanyuki development is being implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework.
The wider programme seeks to address housing needs among military personnel by increasing access to decent accommodation while improving their welfare and living conditions.
The 790 units in Nanyuki therefore form part of a broader rollout targeting KDF personnel in different parts of the country.
KDF personnel to access cheaper mortgages
The construction programme comes alongside a separate initiative aimed at helping military personnel own homes rather than relying solely on institutional housing.
In July 2026, the government launched the Kenya Defence Forces Mortgage Scheme, offering KDF personnel mortgage financing at an interest rate of about 4 per cent.
The initiative was established through a partnership involving the Kenya Defence Forces, the Civil Servants Housing Scheme Fund, the Affordable Housing Board and KCB Bank Kenya.
Mariru said the scheme would provide service members with a structured pathway to home ownership.
“The framework will enable our Kenya Defence Forces personnel to access affordable mortgage financing and home ownership opportunities – at about 4% interest rate,” he said.
Government links housing to KDF welfare
The government has presented the housing programme as part of broader efforts to improve the welfare of public servants, including members of the military.
Mariru said decent housing remains an important component of supporting personnel who serve in the country’s security forces.
“The welfare of our service men and women remains a key priority. As they dedicate their lives to safeguarding our nation, we must continue investing in initiatives that improve their quality of life,” he said.
The tripartite agreement signed during the mortgage scheme’s launch is expected to complement the construction of new housing by making home ownership more affordable for KDF personnel.
When will the Nanyuki homes be ready?
With construction now at 98 per cent, the remaining work is largely focused on finishing and preparing the units for occupation.
The Defence Ministry expects the project to be handed over in the coming weeks, although an exact handover date was not provided.
Once completed, the 790-unit development will add to the country’s expanding KDF housing stock and form part of the government’s wider effort to provide military personnel with improved accommodation and affordable home ownership options.
