President Ruto launches Wajir County Teaching and Referral Hospital emergency complex

Date:

President William Ruto has officially commissioned the new Accident and Emergency Building at the Wajir County Teaching and Referral Hospital, marking a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve access to quality medical services in Northern Kenya.

The modern facility was launched on Monday during the President’s visit to Wajir County for the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations, becoming one of the flagship development projects unveiled during the national event.

The state-of-the-art emergency complex is expected to enhance the county’s capacity to respond to medical emergencies, reduce patient referrals to distant facilities, and improve health outcomes for residents across the North Eastern region.

Expanding Access to Critical Medical Services

Speaking during the launch, President Ruto said the government remains committed to ensuring all Kenyans have access to quality and affordable healthcare regardless of their location.

He noted that investments in modern health facilities are central to the country’s Universal Health Coverage agenda and will help bridge long-standing disparities in access to specialized medical services.

The President said the new emergency centre will strengthen healthcare delivery in Wajir and neighboring counties by providing timely treatment for accident victims, critical care patients, and other emergency cases.

“This facility demonstrates our commitment to improving healthcare services and ensuring that wananchi receive quality treatment closer to their homes. We are investing in modern health infrastructure because healthcare is a fundamental pillar of national development,” President Ruto said.

Transforming Wajir into a Regional Health Hub

The Accident and Emergency Building forms part of broader efforts to transform Wajir County Teaching and Referral Hospital into a regional centre of excellence capable of serving thousands of patients from across Northern Kenya.

County leaders welcomed the facility, saying it will significantly reduce the burden on patients who previously had to travel long distances to seek specialized emergency treatment in other parts of the country.

Health officials noted that the new complex is equipped to handle a wide range of emergency cases while improving patient management, response times, and overall service delivery.

Development Beyond Healthcare

The launch comes amid increased government investment in Wajir County, including improvements in roads, sports infrastructure, education facilities, water projects, and healthcare services.

The commissioning of the emergency complex underscores the government’s focus on expanding development opportunities in historically underserved regions and ensuring equitable access to public services.

Residents expressed optimism that the new facility will save lives, create employment opportunities for healthcare professionals, and strengthen the county’s healthcare system for years to come.

As Wajir continues to benefit from strategic public investments, the newly launched Accident and Emergency Building is expected to play a critical role in delivering timely, life-saving medical care and advancing the region’s health sector transformation.
