Mombasa county unveils KSh70 million plan to transform Uhuru Gardens

Date:

The Mombasa County Government has unveiled an ambitious KSh70 million redevelopment project aimed at transforming Uhuru Gardens into a world-class recreational and tourism destination.

Dubbed “Uhuru Gardens 2.0,” the project seeks to modernise one of Mombasa’s most iconic public spaces, creating a vibrant environment for residents, families, tourists and community groups.

County officials said the redevelopment forms part of broader efforts to enhance public amenities, promote tourism and improve the quality of life for residents while positioning Mombasa as a leading urban and leisure destination.

Families and visitors enjoy leisure activities at Uhuru Gardens, which will soon feature upgraded facilities and expanded public spaces.

Modern Recreational Facilities

Under the proposed redesign, Uhuru Gardens will feature a range of modern recreational amenities designed to cater to people of all ages.

The county plans to establish family-friendly picnic areas, expansive green spaces, a modern children’s playground and outdoor fitness facilities. Dedicated walking and jogging tracks will also be developed to encourage healthy lifestyles and outdoor activities among residents.

Officials noted that the improvements are intended to make the park more accessible, attractive and functional for everyday use.

Boosting Tourism and Cultural Activities

A key highlight of the redevelopment will be the construction of a modern amphitheatre that will serve as a venue for cultural performances, entertainment events, public exhibitions and community gatherings.

The county government believes the facility will provide a platform for local artists, performers and cultural groups while enriching Mombasa’s vibrant arts and entertainment scene.

In addition, a Tourist Information Centre will be established within the park to provide visitors with information on key attractions, historical sites and tourism experiences across Mombasa County.

The facility is expected to strengthen the county’s tourism infrastructure by offering a convenient information hub for both local and international visitors.

Improved Amenities and Security

The redevelopment will also focus on improving convenience and safety for park users.

Plans include the installation of modern washrooms and nappy-changing facilities to better serve families and visitors.

Extensive landscaping and beautification works will be undertaken to enhance the park’s aesthetics, while a secure perimeter wall will be constructed to safeguard the facility and improve security.

County officials said these improvements will create a cleaner, safer and more welcoming environment for all users.

Creating a Flagship Public Space

The county government envisions Uhuru Gardens 2.0 as a premier public destination capable of hosting a wide range of activities, including family outings, birthday celebrations, fitness sessions, youth programmes, cultural festivals and social events.

The redevelopment is expected to contribute significantly to urban renewal efforts while creating new opportunities for tourism, recreation and community engagement.

Once completed, Uhuru Gardens is projected to become one of Mombasa’s flagship public parks and a major attraction for both residents and visitors seeking leisure, culture and outdoor experiences in the coastal city.
