Nairobi County is fast-tracking road construction and rehabilitation projects across several estates as Governor Johnson Sakaja moves to revive long-delayed infrastructure developments.
Residents in several Nairobi estates are beginning to experience improved mobility following the completion and acceleration of key road infrastructure projects that had stalled for years.
Among the latest projects to be completed is the recarpeting of Othaya-Githembe Road in Kariobangi North Ward, a project that residents had waited for since 2021. The road’s completion is expected to ease transport challenges, improve access to businesses and residential areas, and boost economic activity within the neighborhood.
The project forms part of a broader infrastructure renewal programme being undertaken by the Nairobi City County Government to address years of deteriorating roads and inadequate drainage systems across the capital.
Governor Johnson Sakaja said the county has intensified efforts to unlock stalled projects and expand road construction works across both formal estates and informal settlements.
“Our commitment is to ensure that every part of Nairobi benefits from quality infrastructure. From the inner city to the estates, we are investing in roads, drainage and public amenities to create a more connected, accessible and productive city,” said Sakaja.

Stalled Projects Brought Back to Life
For many residents, the completion of roads that had remained unfinished for years represents a significant improvement in daily life.
Poor road conditions have long been blamed for increasing travel times, damaging vehicles and limiting access to essential services in many parts of Nairobi.
County officials say reviving stalled projects has become a priority under the city’s infrastructure development agenda, with several roads now moving from planning and procurement stages into active construction and completion.
The completion of Othaya-Githembe Road is being viewed as one of the clearest examples of the county’s efforts to address longstanding infrastructure gaps that residents have repeatedly raised over the years.
Viwandani Residents to Benefit from New Road Links
In Viwandani Ward, major road works are also progressing.
The upgrading of Uchumi Road and the tarmacking of the access road connecting Lunga Lunga Centre to Donholm Village are expected to significantly improve connectivity within one of Nairobi’s busiest industrial and residential zones.
The projects are designed to ease movement for residents, improve access for businesses and reduce congestion along key transport corridors.
Local traders and commuters have welcomed the developments, noting that better roads often translate into lower transport costs, faster movement of goods and improved economic opportunities.
Infrastructure Drive Expands Across Nairobi
The latest developments are part of a wider countywide infrastructure programme currently being implemented across multiple sub-counties.
Road rehabilitation projects are ongoing in areas including Kilimani, Pangani, Kamukunji and Starehe, alongside drainage improvement works aimed at addressing flooding challenges that have affected many neighborhoods during rainy seasons.
County officials argue that upgrading road networks remains critical to supporting Nairobi’s growing population and expanding economy.
With Nairobi serving as East Africa’s commercial hub, efficient transport infrastructure is increasingly seen as essential for productivity, investment attraction and service delivery.
Boosting Business and Improving Quality of Life
Urban planners have consistently emphasized the link between quality infrastructure and economic growth.
Improved roads not only enhance mobility but also increase property values, attract investments and support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises.
Sakaja said the ongoing projects are already delivering tangible benefits to residents and businesses.
“Roads that had stalled for years are now being completed, improving mobility, boosting businesses and enhancing the quality of life for our people,” he said.
The governor added that the county remains focused on delivering practical development projects that directly impact the daily lives of Nairobi residents.
A Visible Transformation Taking Shape
As construction equipment continues to roll into neighborhoods across the city, residents are witnessing visible changes in areas that have struggled with poor infrastructure for years.
The county government says additional road and drainage projects are expected to be completed in the coming months as Nairobi seeks to modernize its infrastructure and improve service delivery.
For many residents, the revival of long-delayed projects signals a renewed focus on addressing the city’s infrastructure deficit and creating a more efficient, accessible and economically vibrant capital.
