Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), describing the institution as critical in safeguarding equal opportunities and protecting vulnerable groups across the country.
Speaking during a meeting with NGEC commissioners at the Harambee Annex on Friday, Kindiki said the government would continue supporting the commission’s efforts to promote inclusion, fairness, and equal access to opportunities for all Kenyans.
He noted that NGEC plays a central role in ensuring that no segment of society is left behind in the country’s development agenda, regardless of gender, age, disability, or social status.
Government Promises Stronger Collaboration
The Deputy President said the government would enhance collaboration between NGEC and various state agencies to improve service delivery and strengthen implementation of equality and inclusion policies.
According to Kindiki, closer coordination among institutions will help eliminate duplication of roles while ensuring resources are used efficiently to address challenges facing marginalized and vulnerable populations.
“The government remains committed to supporting institutions that promote fairness, inclusion, and equal access to opportunities for all Kenyans,” he said.
Protecting Institutional Independence
Kindiki also emphasized the importance of preserving the independence of constitutional commissions, saying autonomous oversight institutions are vital for strengthening governance and accountability.
He assured the commissioners that the government would continue facilitating their work while respecting the commission’s constitutional mandate and operational independence.
The Deputy President noted that empowering NGEC would help advance social justice and ensure that all citizens enjoy equal protection under the law.
Promoting Equal Opportunities
The meeting focused on the commission’s role in advancing gender equality, inclusion, and protection of vulnerable groups, including women, children, persons with disabilities, older persons, and marginalized communities.
Kindiki said an effective and well-resourced NGEC is essential in supporting national efforts aimed at creating a more equitable society where every Kenyan has an opportunity to thrive.
He reiterated that the government’s development agenda is anchored on inclusivity and equitable access to opportunities, adding that institutions such as NGEC remain key partners in achieving those objectives.
