Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Tuesday joined former Meru Governor and ex-Cabinet Minister Kiraitu Murungi and his family for a requiem mass held in honour of his daughter, Anita Kendi Murungi, who passed away after a short illness.
The emotional service brought together family members, political leaders, and friends who gathered to support the Murungi family during a moment of grief and reflection.
Leaders Stand With the Murungi Family
In his condolence message, DP Kindiki described Kiraitu Murungi as a long-time colleague, mentor, and close friend, reflecting on their shared experiences in public service over the years.
He paid tribute to Kiraitu’s long political career, noting his decades of service in elective politics and senior government positions, as well as his continued commitment to public life and national development.
Kindiki also highlighted Kiraitu’s strong dedication to family and community values, saying many younger leaders had drawn inspiration from his example.

Light Moment During a Difficult Occasion
In a lighter moment, the Deputy President recalled having taught Anita Murungi during his time as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi.
He jokingly noted that he had played a small role in her upbringing through his classroom interaction, a remark that briefly lightened the mood among mourners.
The DP used the moment to reflect on the personal connections that often exist between leaders beyond politics and public service.

Call for Unity and National Cohesion
Kindiki also used the occasion to urge Kenyans to uphold peace and national unity, especially in a politically sensitive period.
He noted that while political differences are inevitable, safeguarding national stability must remain a shared responsibility.
The Deputy President appealed to both leaders and citizens to place the country’s interests above individual or political ambitions.

Presidential Message of Condolence
Kindiki conveyed condolences from President William Ruto, who is currently out of the country, noting that the Head of State had been in direct contact with the family and had expressed his support during the period of mourning.
Senior Leaders in Attendance
The requiem mass was attended by several senior political and legal figures, including former Chief Justice David Maraga and former Attorney General Amos Wako, among others.
Their presence reflected Kiraitu Murungi’s long-standing relationships across Kenya’s political, legal, and public service circles.
Burial Plans
The Murungi family is expected to proceed with burial arrangements later in the week, with the final send-off scheduled for Friday in Meru County.
