Monica Juma sworn in to top UN leadership role, strengthening Kenya’s global influence

Date:

Former National Security Adviser Monica Juma has officially assumed one of the United Nations’ most influential leadership positions, marking a significant milestone for Kenya’s presence in global diplomacy and international governance.

Juma was sworn in at the United Nations Headquarters in New York as Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The oath was administered by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

In her remarks following the ceremony, Juma pledged to uphold the principles of integrity, impartiality, and service that underpin the United Nations system.

She said the appointment comes with a profound responsibility to serve people across the world and contribute to international efforts aimed at promoting peace, justice, security, and sustainable development.

Major Diplomatic Achievement for Kenya

Juma’s elevation to the senior UN position is being viewed as a major diplomatic achievement for Kenya, placing a Kenyan leader at the center of global efforts to combat transnational crime, terrorism, corruption, cybercrime, drug trafficking, and other emerging security threats.

Her appointment also highlights Africa’s growing representation in international institutions responsible for shaping global policy and governance.

Distinguished Public Service Career

Before taking up the UN assignment, Juma served as Kenya’s first National Security Adviser and Secretary to the National Security Council between 2022 and 2026.

She has held several high-ranking government positions, including Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Foreign Affairs, and Energy. She also served in acting capacities in the Petroleum and Mining docket and previously worked as Principal Secretary in key ministries, including Foreign Affairs, Interior, and Defence.

Her diplomatic experience extends beyond Kenya’s borders. Between 2010 and 2013, she served as Kenya’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Djibouti while also representing the country at the African Union, IGAD, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

Academic and International Credentials

Juma brings extensive academic and policy expertise to the role. She holds a PhD from University of Oxford and earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees in Government and Public Administration from University of Nairobi.

She has also worked with leading research and policy institutions, including the African Centre for Strategic Studies in Washington, D.C., and academic institutions in South Africa.

Leading the Global Fight Against Crime and Insecurity

As head of UNOV and UNODC, Juma will oversee international initiatives aimed at strengthening the rule of law, supporting criminal justice systems, and enhancing cooperation among member states in addressing organized crime and security threats.

Her new role places her at the forefront of global efforts to tackle issues such as terrorism financing, illicit trafficking, corruption, cybercrime, and cross-border criminal networks.
