Government fast-tracks Rironi-Mau Summit road expansion project

Date:

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has assured motorists that the ongoing expansion of the Rironi-Mau Summit highway will significantly improve travel, reduce accidents and ease congestion along one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the project on Monday evening, Kindiki expressed satisfaction with the progress made by contractors, noting that the long-awaited upgrade is on course to deliver major economic and social benefits.

Traffic congestion and accidents to be reduced

The Deputy President said the multi-carriageway project is designed to address years of traffic gridlock and frequent road crashes that have plagued travellers heading to western Kenya and neighbouring countries.

“Soon this expansive carriageway will sort out the frustrating traffic snarl-ups, the fatal road accidents and the disappointment of lost travel time,” Kindiki said.

He added that the improved road network will enhance mobility, facilitate trade and save lives by making travel safer and more efficient.

“It will open our economy, expand opportunities, save human life and enhance trade within Kenya and Eastern and Central Africa,” he stated.

Project expected to boost economic growth

Once completed, the highway is expected to reduce travel time, lower vehicle operating costs and improve road safety through the construction of grade-separated interchanges, overpasses and underpasses.

According to Kindiki, the project marks a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to modernise the country’s transport infrastructure and support economic growth.

He credited President William Ruto for driving the implementation of the project, saying previous administrations had discussed the expansion for decades without success.

“The idea has been discussed since the 1980s, but it is this administration that has moved to implement it,” the Deputy President said.

Thousands of jobs created for young people

During the inspection, Kindiki interacted with construction workers employed on various sections of the highway and commended them for their contribution to the project.

He noted that the road expansion has created employment opportunities for thousands of young people while also helping them acquire valuable technical skills.

“You are not only benefiting from employment but also contributing to the successful delivery of this historic project. On behalf of the government, we appreciate your commitment,” he told the workers.

Government plans further highway expansion

The Rironi-Mau Summit road is being developed through a public-private partnership arrangement and will feature dual and triple carriageway sections aimed at accommodating increasing traffic volumes.

The government is also considering extending the highway upgrade beyond Mau Summit toward the Kenya-Uganda border to improve regional connectivity and facilitate cross-border trade.

Kindiki said large-scale infrastructure projects remain one of the government’s key strategies for creating jobs and empowering young people.

“We are committed to ensuring that young people secure meaningful employment and gain skills through participation in these mega projects. This is the best way to empower them and create sustainable opportunities,” he said.

Project launched in 2025

President Ruto officially launched the expansion of the Rironi-Mau Summit highway in November 2025, directing contractors to adhere to agreed timelines to ensure the project is completed without delays.

Once complete, the highway is expected to become a critical transport link connecting Nairobi with western Kenya and the wider East African region while supporting trade, tourism and economic development.
