Ruto tours UN-backed Norwegian research vessel as Kenya deepens blue economy partnerships

Date:

President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening its blue economy and expanding maritime partnerships following a tour of the renowned research vessel Dr Fridtjof Nansen at the Port of Mombasa.

The vessel, owned by Norway and operating under the United Nations framework, is one of the world’s leading marine research ships, supporting fisheries management, ocean conservation and marine ecosystem monitoring across several regions.

Ruto said Kenya is leveraging international partnerships to unlock opportunities in the maritime sector while promoting sustainable use of ocean resources.

Kenya Strengthens Maritime Cooperation With Norway

Speaking after touring the vessel, the President said Kenya and Norway are working together to advance cooperation in marine research, maritime trade and blue economy development.

“We are advancing Kenya’s maritime and blue economy agenda through cooperation with Norway, exploring opportunities for investment, knowledge exchange, skills development, technology transfer and job creation across the maritime economy,” Ruto said.

The President noted that stronger collaboration will help Kenya tap into the vast potential of its coastal resources while enhancing scientific research and innovation.

The Dr Fridtjof Nansen vessel is managed by Norway’s Institute of Marine Research and has played a key role in supporting sustainable fisheries and ocean management in developing countries.

Focus on Jobs and Skills Development

Ruto emphasized that maritime partnerships are not only about trade and research but also about creating employment opportunities for Kenyan youth.

He welcomed commitments by Norwegian maritime companies to recruit Kenyan seafarers, describing the move as a major boost for the country’s growing maritime workforce.

According to the President, plans are underway to increase training opportunities and equip more young Kenyans with skills needed in the global shipping industry.

The initiative is expected to position Kenya as a leading supplier of maritime labour within the region and beyond.

New Shipping Routes Under Discussion

Kenya and Norway are also exploring the possibility of establishing new shipping links between Kenyan ports and Norway to facilitate trade and improve logistics.

Ruto said discussions are focusing on strengthening connections through the Ports of Mombasa and Lamu, which are increasingly becoming strategic gateways for regional and international commerce.

The proposed routes could enhance supply chain efficiency, attract new investments and boost the movement of goods between East Africa and Europe.

Driving Sustainable Blue Economy Growth

The President said Kenya remains committed to building a sustainable blue economy that balances economic growth with environmental conservation.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to promote green shipping, protect marine ecosystems and support ocean-based industries that can generate jobs and income for coastal communities.

Ruto noted that maritime cooperation, research and innovation will be critical in helping Kenya maximise the potential of its ocean resources while contributing to global efforts to safeguard marine environments.

The visit to the Dr Fridtjof Nansen came as Kenya continues to position itself as a regional leader in blue economy development and maritime investment, with the government increasingly focusing on ocean-based opportunities as a key pillar of economic growth.
