The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has unveiled plans to hold nationwide ward-level grassroots elections as it continues restructuring the party ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The exercise, which will be coordinated by the party’s National Elections Board (NEB), follows the successful completion of polling centre elections conducted across the country and forms the next phase of UDA’s internal electoral process.
Ward Elections Across All 1,450 Wards
According to the party, the upcoming elections will take place in all 1,450 wards nationwide.
Officials elected during the recently concluded polling centre elections will serve as members of the electoral college responsible for choosing representatives to the UDA Ward Congress.
The party said the exercise is being conducted in line with the provisions of the UDA Constitution and is intended to strengthen grassroots participation while enhancing the party’s organisational capacity.
More Than 543,000 Officials Already Elected
UDA revealed that over 543,000 grassroots officials were elected during the polling centre elections, describing the exercise as one of the largest internal democratic processes undertaken by a political party in Kenya.
Each polling centre elected 20 representatives drawn from different sectors of society, including:
- Farmers
- Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)
- Professionals
- Ordinary party members
- Religious groups
- Youth representatives
- Special Interest Groups (SIGs)
These officials will now participate in electing ward-level party leadership.
Focus on 2027 General Election
National Elections Board Chairperson Anthony Mwaura said the ward elections are part of broader efforts to strengthen UDA’s grassroots structures as the party positions itself for the next General Election.
“The process, anchored in the UDA Party Constitution, is designed to strengthen the Party’s grassroots operational architecture ahead of the 2027 General Election,” the board said in a statement.
The party also noted that special arrangements have been developed to accommodate the unique electoral dynamics in Kenya’s North Eastern region to ensure the exercise remains inclusive and representative.
Preparations Underway
The announcement followed a meeting of the National Elections Board attended by Vice Chairperson and Nominated MP Ali Abdisirat Khalif, alongside other board members.
While UDA confirmed preparations for the ward elections are underway, it did not disclose the official timetable for the exercise.
Party officials said further details, including the election schedule and operational guidelines, will be communicated once planning is complete.
